Subject:Non-Destructive editting??

Hello all. I am using SF XP studio 5. I notice when I format down to mp3, wma or realformat my sound quality goes down. Alot, ringing and unwanted reverb or noise appears in the background. A huge difference from the original WAVs, which is my primary medium. The WAVs are 16 bit 44khz.

Or would this have to do with my version?

I am editting my own sounds and compositions. Does this cause a problem? Is this program geared for samples and sampling?

You will lose something going to a compressed format. How much you lose depends mostly on the level of compression. Usually bitrates of 128Kbps or higher will result in a file almost indistinguishable from the original .wav file. Sometimes you can go as low as 32Kbps and still have music sound pleasant enough to listen to, and rates as low as 12Kbps for speaking only. However, at these rates the sound will show noticable distortion, including what sounds a little like reverb or ringing.

What bitrates are you using when you save these files? What source material (orchestral, keyboard, guitar, small group, vocal only) ?
