Can you give more specifics on your system, like the rest of your hardware and software? Anything running in the background, like utilities and antivirus software?

If you've got a lot of Beatmapped type of tracks, try bouncing down to 3-4 tracks at the most. Beatmapped tracks always stream from the hard drive, so your hard drive would be the crucial point here. Having an Ultra ATA, 7200 RPM model certainly helps out.

You can also try switching your tracks to Loop type tracks by double-clicking the track's track icon and choosing, "Loop," as the track type under the General tab. Caution: Just one 3-minute track eats ~50 MB of RAM. Even with 512 MB of RAM, you'll run out quickly with a lot of long tracks. Just be cautious and watch the memory usage meter in the lower right.
