If I open a MP3 file, modify it and re-save it as a MP3 at the same or higher bitrate, is the file 'compressed' again? If so, and I want to avoid further reduction in sound quality, what should I do -- save it as a WAV file? |

Yes, resaving it to mp3 will worsen the sound. Let's face it, what ever you do to an mp3 file, an already degraded format, you can't win. If this is for personal use and you are not trading the files or using it in an mp3 player, save it to a .wav file. If it must be compressed, save it as a Perfect Clarity Audio (.pca) file. It is lossless and you get back what you put into it. It is propriety to SF but it works for me! You just won't get the compactness that mp3 or even Windows Media (.wma) offers. |

Thanks for the explanation. Just out of curiosity, If I save a MP3 file with the same bitrate settings it was created with, the file size is the same as the original -- what in the sound quality is being 'lost' during the process, and wouldn't this make the file size smaller? |
