Subject:Normalize/equalize different voices to the same level within a single file?

I'm trying to edit a recording of two people talking. One guy always talks *so* quietly while the other talks much louder and sometimes even screams when he gets excited. Needless to say, it makes things difficult! I want to simply process the file so their voices are always at about the same level. I've tried normalize with no success. I'm tired of highlighting each guy's pieces of speech and adjusting the volume as needed. These are 30 minutes shows and it gets frustrating! Is there anything I can do? Am I doing normalize wrong? Or, I just need a filter where everything above a certain volume gets decreased and everything below gets increased? Is this possible or can anyone suggest a tool to equalize voices? Thanks! |

Try using graphic dynamics. Adjust the graph so that the louder voice gets no treatment, while the lower voice gets boosted. Hint: Make a point on the unity line at a position a little above the loudest level of the soft guy's voice. Make another point somewhere below the first. Drag the second point up and to the left while listening and adjust its level until you raise the softer guy's voice to be more even with the first. You may also need to adjust the line near the top to compress the louder guy's voice a little bit. This method will help some, although I doubt it will completely cure your problem. Happy graphing! Jeff ..... THANK YOU!!! It worked *very* well for me... or, as they say, good enough for government work. Everything sounds much better and saves me lots of time. Thanks again! |
