Subject:SF 6.0 Beta Installation Woes

Just downloaded SF 6.0 and was looking forward to messing around with it and giving the good folks @ sonic foundry some quality input.

The installer unzips just fine, runs for a few seconds then halts. "SF has unmet needs." "Internet Exploder 4.0 is not installed" Well... no it's not. I upgraded to 5.5/SP-2 quite some time ago. The recommendation is to trundle off to the MS website and download the latest version WHICH I ALREADY HAVE!

Is there a command-line switch I can use with the installer which might look in a specified locale for IE-4x/better? The registry keys for my IE installation are all in the usual locations, but my install directory isn't c:\program files\internet explorer --or whatever the default is.

Can someone point me to a helpfile, manual, ANYTHING about this? Seems like nobody else had this issue (or hasn't written anything here about it yet.)

Please send replies to: SamFrench@aol.com. I'm not sure how often I'll be able to get back here to check the forums within the next week. I'd really appreciate ANY assistance other user(s) or anyone at SF could give me.

Thanks in advance,

Sam French

I just ran into the same problem after I let my 56K modem download all night and looked forward to trying it out in the morning, to only be stopped by the installer which said I needed IE 4.0, which I have IE 5.0 on this Win98 SE machine. Oops....back to the drawing board boys. BTW, a patch fix would be much nicer for this instead of me having to spend another 4 hours downloading the entire thing.

This is a known issue which we are working on. A workaround is to do a silent installation, which will skip the IE4 detection. Go to the location where you extracted the setup files (by default: "C:\Program Files\Sonic Foundry Setup\Sound Forge 6.0 Beta") and run:

forgesetup.exe /q

Sorry for the trouble,

Whew! Thank GOD! I took SonicDan's advice and ran the quiet installation, fearing that it would install over my 5.0 installation. I bit the bullet as the installer did it's thing. To my [pleasant] surprise, it went into a directory all its own and seems to have left my 5.0 installation just as it was. I'm curious now about what it's done to the registry for my plug-ins. Will all of my 5.0 plug-ins be available in 6.0? How about my registration for the 5.0 plugins? Will I have to do them over again because they expire along with the 6.0 beta? Stay tuned... So far, so good.
