Hi ...

First off, I'd like to say that I love the new features! The non-destructive editing and the "Master Section" were the only 2 advantages that WaveLab had for me, and now you've done one better! The versatility of the new Audio Plugin Chainer is a welcome addition, especially seeing as the auditioning options are so elegant (one click away from A/B)! Good work!!

Secondly, seeing as this is a Beta release, I assume you want feedback regarding the bugs/issues. So ... I'll start this thread off with a few issues I've noticed:

1. No MP3 import/export options. This may not be a bug, but it certainly is a glaring omission. It was present in v5.0, so I hope (expect) it will be present in the retail version.

2. The Audio Plugin Chainer has strange handling when moving the cursor during audition-playback.

In regular playback mode (without the APC), when the file is playing and I move the cursor (by clicking the mouse on the waveform and/or dragging a selection), the audio continues playing in a linear fashion without interuptions. In "Loop Playback" mode, the file will always play and loop from the cursor/selection. If I drag a new selection while the audio is playing, the audio will jump to the cursor (or the end of my new selection) and loop in that selection accordingly. This works exactly as it should.

In APC-audition playback, however, moving the cursor produces inconsistent effects. In loop playback mode, the audio will immediately jump to the cursor (on mouse-click DOWN), and jump back to the cursor on mouse-click UP. This causes an audible stuttering of the audio (if you don't smash the mouse button quickly). When creating a selection, the audio will continue at the BEGINNING of the selection, rather than at the end of the selection (as per the loop-playback behaviour indicated above.)

This is also the case in NON-loop playback mode. The characteristics are exactly the same as above. In this case, the audio should NOT jump at all, but I should be able to move the cursor and create selections with abandon and still have the file playback from the cursor in a completely linear fashion.

To test this error yourself, simply engage the APC (no effects necessary) and run the audition (both in regular mode and loop-playback mode). Then click around in the wave file. To get a more glaring example of the error, click and hold, then release. You'll hear the audio playback when you click down, and then playback AGAIN when you release.

... and that's all!!

For all of my complaining, this is a VERY small fix I think! Everything else seems to be running smoothly (so far). I'll keep you posted.

Thanks for the opportunity!

Hello,

There is no MP3 saving or editing in the Beta version due to licensing restrictions. The functionality will still be present in the retail version of Sound Forge 6.0.

For your other comments, please be sure to forward them to forge6beta@sonicfoundry.com.

Thanks,
Brian

I need to play around with beta 6 more, but my initial reaction is impressive, just for the speed of opening the files! SF has caught up with Cool Edit in that respect. This alone makes me more willing to use SF than I have been.

I don't think I like the DX favorites, though. I would have been happy with the simple, usual drop down.

One more piece of good news! I'm using the first release of Windows 98 and beta 6.0 works as flawlessly as 5.0. SF should go ahead and add Win 98 as allowable just as Win 98SE is.

I have just downloaded Sound Forge 6.0, and I initially I was impressed. Unfortunately I have run into a minor snafu with the Sound Reduction 2.0 Direct-X Plug-in (after re-registering it). Basically it doesn't work in SF6.0. I wonder what other Direct-X plug-ins don't work in SF6.0 as well??

Hi Chris
What OS are you running?
I have Win2k Spk2 and I do have SF Noise Reduction 2.0a running fine in SF6 along with Click and Crackle Removal and Clip Peak Restoration.

1. Will SF6 open a 32bit{IEEE float}tempoary file immediately or do I have to check it off in pref>file>use32bit..... Each time I check it off it is unchecked when I close SF6 and open it up again...PLEASE explain thoroughly so I can understand.
2. When I try to extract audio from a cd I would like to audition a song prior to importing. I have read by tracks selected...highlighted a song...press play...NOTHING! This feature has never worked ever for me...SF5 and now 6! Plus when I highlighted all 5 tracks to be imported at once tracks #1,4 had skips in them. The cd was clean and played well before importing. I had to reimport both one at a time and all went well.

Please add this feature: F11 screen maximization just like in Vegas Video 3. I dock my video on the bottom left and the rest to the right of it[stacked...cool!]. But now I have to resize it manually instead of a one button push like in vegas. Is there a different way of doing so I have over looked? In other words I want the editing main screen to share the room between the docked tabs at the bottom and then I want it to take up the whole screen for editing purposes...hence hiding of the docked tabs at the bottom.

Back to work...later.

Howdy,
To adress your issues...

1. This might be a bug (we will look into it)
2. The beta version of Forge 6.0 relies on analog CD-extraction. In order to hear the preview, make sure you have a CD-Audio cable running from the back of your CD drive to your soundcard. (Another option is that you can plug headphones into the front of your drive to hear the preview.) Without that cable, you won't hear anything even though Forge 6.0 is playing the song. We however extract the audio digitally.

We are working to get Digital Audio Playback in this instance for the final release of Forge. (thus removing the need for the cable)

Thanks

I've tried in both win98se and win2k service pack 2...Each time I reopen SF6 I must go into pref>file>click use 32bit{IEEE Float}temporary files. It's always off unless prompted, never saves the changes to that.

Please take my feature request seriously when I ask for the F11 screen maximization like in vegas. I really would like to hide my docked windows and get some work done then click F11 to see the windows and make adjustments. I even have it programmed into my contour shuttle pro for use in vegas...at least I use it alot. PLEASE PLEASE add this to SF6!!!

I have also noticed a problem with SF6 & NR2.0
When fixing individual spots with the click & crackle plug in, SF6 removes wave data.
All other components of NR seem to be working fine.
I am using 98SE and NR2.0 on an AMD 1.8.

The bug with SF NR 2.0 cutting files when editing portions is not unique to SF 6.0. This is also happening in Cool Edit Pro 2.0. This does not seem to happen with either SF 5.x or Cool Edit Pro 1.2 or Cool Edit 2000.

SonicIMC,

Yes, please try to get the Digital Audio Playback working
as my soundcard doesn't have an analog input for the CD ROM,
thus the need for something like Siren, or some other player
in the future since Siren's been discontinued.
