I'm using the latest builds of both ACID Pro 3.0 and Sound Forge 5 with no problems. (Using Win XP Home.) (My soundcard is an M-Audio Audiophile 2496 and video card is an ATI Radeon 32 MB DDR. Soundcard and video card are probably the two heaviest factors that will affect you the most, so it's important to keep those devices' drivers up to date.) Iacobus |

Do you feel XP is more stable/robust than earlier OS versions? Faster? Any new "must have" features that are really worth it? |

i've had many troubles with win2k that i didn't have under win98. notably, recording files and playing back at the same time is prone to introducing errors into the recorded files - glitches, skips, etc. this could easily be a problem with my soundcard/mobo but it does only happen under 2k. just a warning. also, due to a windows issue, mme drivers only work in 16-bit under win2k/xp so if using more than 16 bits is important to you that is an issue to consider. |

Definitely on first two questions. I haven't had a major crash as of yet, and projects render/process a little more faster under XP. I've always liked NT; the only thing that's always stopped me is the lack of multimedia support. (I've upgraded from Windows 98 SE, BTW.) There really aren't any must-haves, apart from the stability and performance. You can customize a whole lot more, including just about everything in the Start menu. I have no issues recording at 24-bit either. I've heard that 24-bit wasn't actually 24-bit under W2K, but it is under XP. I'm not sure of the specifics, but it's here in the forums somewhere. I've been very happy with the performance of Acid Pro 3.0f and Sound Forge 5.0f with Windows XP Home. I haven't actually tried simultaneous recoding and playback, so I can't comment there. Within Acid, and using loops, I've had no problems. XP Home is VERY stable and if you convert your drive to NTFS, it is even more so. CAUTION: Once you convert from FAT 16 of FAT 32 to NTFS, YOU CAN NOT GO BACK TO FAT 16 OR 32 WITHOUT A FORMAT OF YOUR HARD DRIVE. Choose wisely. |
