Is there static or is the audio breaking up? There are probably several different factors affecting your problem. Can your system handle the DVD decoding capabilites alone? Since you're probably using a software DVD decoder (more than likely it's a branded version of either WinDVD or PowerDVD), you're making your PC do all the work of decoding the DVD playback. (That's usually a good thing, as you'll get a better picture vs. a dedicated DVD decoder card anyway. Also, some video cards come with DVD decoding hardware on board (negating the need for a separate DVD decoder card), which will take some of the load off your system.) Factor in Sound Forge—running and trying to capture high-quality audio—and you don't need to guess that your system is doing a lot. Do you have a standalone, set top DVD player? You could run the audio output from that to your soundcard and capture audio that way. Unless you have a high-quality soundcard/interface, you'll probably need a Y-adapter cable that goes from RCA stereo (male) to 1/8" minijack. You'll, of course, need to monitor the video separately so that you can navigate the DVD. HTH, Iacobus |

One clarification ... are you getting the sound from the DVD and the static? Or are you just getting static only? If you're getting nothing but static, then you've probably got the wrong recording input selected in your sound card's mixer control panel. Double-click the little yellow speaker icon, select Options, Properties, Recording, and choose the input labeled "Mixed Output", "What You Hear", or "PC Speaker" (something along those lines). If that doesn't work and you have an input labeled "Video" or "CD Audio", try that one instead. |
