freezing problem when editing/processing -Sound Forge - PC

After editing or processing, Sound Forge freezes up for approx. 5-10 seconds. I am recording audio only at 44k. My system is 1.5G, 2 40G hard drives, tons of ram. Audiomedia III sound card. SF 4.5h with updated driver. (I use SF for a particular client and unless they pay for the upgrade to 5.0, I'm not interested - unless of course it can solve my problem). Length of freezing depends on size of file and where in the file I'm editing/processing. I've been using SF with the AMIII for about 4 years now with no problems until a few months ago. I have defragged, deleted temp files and cookies, and uninstalled and reinstalled SF, but so far nothing has helped. I appreciate any suggestions.
