Canon GL1 and Video Capture

EArrigotti wrote on 3/17/2002, 6:40 PM
I am having trouble using the camera controls in Video Capture to control my GL1. I can play the tape from the camera and then press the "capture video" button on the software, but I am not able to gain control over the camera using the software interface.

With my old 1 CCD camera (a JVC) I just plugged it in, turned it on, and BOOM I had complete 'remote' control over it using VCap. I'd like to have the same control with the GL1.

I know that you fellers there at SF use GL1's and XL1's, so maybe you have a quick answer to my little quandry.

Anyone else should feel welcome to chime in as well.

Thanks!

EArrigotti,
I have VV3, Premiere 6.01, and Media Studio Pro 6.5, Pinnacle DV500 plus v3.0 and I don't use any of these for capture. I use Scenalyzer Live: http://scenalyzer.com/main.html
Once I used Scenalyzer Live I felt no need to look back. Try the free download and check it out.. and I also have a Canon GL1 which works just fine.

I had a similar problem when I first hooked up my GL-1. I am using a Pyro OHCI 1394 card and the problem was that it was using the Texas Instruments drivers and not the MicroSoft drivers. Once I got it to read the MS drivers I have complete control of the camera from the computer.

In order to get the card to switch to the MS drivers you have to totally delete all the TI drivers. There are complete instructions on the Pyro web site or the here on the SF site under support. Sorry I don't have the links to provide. Good luck.

In Video Capture goto the Help menu->Sonic Foundry on the Web->OHCI and DV Information. This will step thru getting the MS drivers installed properly for use.

Yes, we've done extensive testing with Canon XL1, GL1, Elura, and ZR devices.

I tried the procedure that you recommended, but the info in the articles pertained to Windows 98SE, ME, and 2000. I have XPHome. The trouble with that is if I uninstall any drivers, as soon as I go to re-install, it will automatically re-install the Texas Instrument drivers for my fire-wire card.

I'm still scratching my head a bit...

Thanks in advance for the help.

EArrigotti, when you have the GL-1 connected and on, where does the device show up?
Under Sound, Video, and game controllers?

If you right click on it and choose Update Driver, you should be able to click on "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced" and then hit next.

Then choose "Don't Search. I will choose the driver to install." Hit next.

What is listed for you then? Is the "Show compatible hardware" checked?

My camera shows up as Canon DV under imaging devices.

Actually, I may have solved my problem. I checked the 'enable DV device control' in the options section of Vegas Capture, and I gained control of the camera.

The strange thing is that I had control of my JVC camera the whole time. Maybe Capture has its own profile for each camera?

I'm not sure, but I was able to get device control using the software interface.

Thanks a lot for your help.

Nope, that pref is for all devices. If must have somehow been disabled.
