Hi All: I have Sound Forge XP v.4.0d. My goal is to create a good high quality but small file size Real Audio file (.rm). I am recording from a tape recorder at 22,050hz 8bit mono, which of course creates a .wav file. The Mode is listed as Multiple Takes. There is evidently a volume monitor to the right which starts at -5.6 at the top and the bottom shows about -57. (What is the optimum recording range for a good voice capture?) The input format is Time. I haven't been doing any of the processes like Normalize, etc. once the recording is captured. Should I? When the recording is completed, I simply save it as a .rm file. When the save box for the .rm file pops up, I select Save Audio Stream and then select 8.5 Kbps voice. The play back sounds fine on my machine, so I upload it to the server. I check it out and it sounds fine to me, but other people accessing that same file hear it at a slower speed. What have I done wrong and/or what can I do to correct it? TIA Bob Green |

Always save as a WAV so you can go back to the file later if you need to. You probably could use normalization on the file. -5.6 sounds a little low. Maybe also some EQ to eliminate any inherent tape hiss. Why not try recording in at least 16-bit mono, 44.1 KHz? You know what they say: Garbage in, garbage out. Commit to the project as if you were creating it for CD and see what develops. Iacobus |

I found out what my problem was. I just had to reformat and reinstall everything about a week ago due to a nasty virus. I didn't get my drivers for my sound card installed properly. Unfortunately, my woes are not quite over yet. Now the system won't "hear" my recording device. Gotta figure that one out now. Man, I hate people that let loose virus' on the rest of us. What a waster of time and resources. Thanks all. Bob Green |

This is a really simple solution, but it was my solution when I had a similar problem. Did you check what input device is set to record in the Windows audio properties? If not, go into the Windows Volume Control and go to properties. There should a box there that says "recording." Check that box and then select any items from the list below that you want to record from. When you click okay, you can then select any of those items you just selected to record from. |

Hate to spoil the day - but sound card drivers are not going to make a file sound slower on my machnine than it did on yours. If your drivers were not installed properly (before the virus) that would have affected your card not working properly (not a file being sent to me then not working correctly). I'm with MD on this one...sounds like the leve at which you are originally recording your files. I would never go as low as 8-bit Mono 22,050 khz. 16-bit, 44.1 - to WAV, edit, compress to RM (save the WAV). But...hey, if it works for ya, it works. |
