This is directed to all those duly appointed representatives of the Sonic Foundry Brain Trust, and their management.

Can I get you to quick like a bunny hop over to Business 2.0 to read an article on knowledge management?

Since I am in the business, at the very conservative development end, I would like to give my conclusions about this forum as a "KM" method: good, but you need to delete or hide all insignificant, preposterous, and clueless messages, just as the KM warrior in the article describes the circulation of that folder. If it's an option to show or not to show, that suggests a feature-set I haven't seen yet.

MORE BASIC: the folder has to come back automatically for review through a subscription to threads. THAT'S commonly implemented -- though it rarely works right -- and is not implemented here (or is totally hidden.)

And the presentation of threads should be complete rather than one at a time -- to encourage digesting & filing.

Finally you may want to implement subscription to talent (user-ID). The big lesson of the article is that informal apprenticeships are much better at producing answers than advanced KM technology & software.

I highly recommend putting some of that hot new talent to work on this -- and you should pass this up the chain cause this is how you can get that new Porche-mobile. (You might humbly suggest 30% of the first year savings -- and be ready to settle for less.)

Multimedia Software Developer Sonic Foundry Lays Off 40% Of Staff

Madison, Wisc. -- Sonic Foundry, a developer of audio and video creation
and editing software, announced on Thursday that it will lay off 40
percent of its staff, or about 98 employees. The company said in a
statement that the layoffs are a result of "significant holiday retail
weakness and an overall softening in the PC industry, causing potential
discounting, sales promotions and possible returns in [our] PC software
business unit." The layoffs will reduce the company's operating expenses
by $20 million annually. New York-based Sonic Foundry develops software
for recording and film professionals, webmasters and consumers that allows
them to create, edit and play digital media files on PCs. The company
recently announced its intent to sell its syndication business unit to
Carsey-Werner Distribution. "It's obvious that after further industry
warnings and a continued softening of the economy, additional cost cutting
measures are necessary," said Sonic Foundry CEO Rimas Buinevicius. "We
will continue to adjust our business plan to these rapidly changing market
conditions and will take further actions, if necessary, to position the
company to be able to take advantage of business opportunities as they
reemerge."

See -- if only they had taken my advice. How many employers have I seen take the long slide after ignoring this user? (Several.)

Hmm. Actually I think we really are seeing a fundamental shift in technology stocks in general toward a realization that this technology is out of control (no ROI on labor or assets), and with so much technology out of control, I predict a shift BEYOND "creation" software like music and video production and into control software, which is generically speaking what I do for a living in KM. That said my advice is hereby doubled-down.

However looking at the company's acquisitions and movement into service even I am surprised by this report on several points -- the size of the company and the drastic restructuring -- but you failed to source the article like a good boy should, so I shall read further, get the chronology, and sincerely wish all those unemployed bastards the best, as well as the best for the company and all those employed ones >;^/

17:25 - ah the story is as OLD as my labrador's beard. 12/2000. Okay -- so let us hope then that they pursue greater control and heed this user.

Actually, I'm very much hoping that they don't.

Not that the information is not on target or useful...but let's consider the audience. I can't speak about the rest of the folks who use Acid/Sound Forge or other SF products...but it's about the creation - not the organization (of data).

Trust me...hype this place up to look like any of the data modules I work with and put together on a dtd basis (in the "real world") and I'll post my notes some other place.

Not trying to be (or sound) rude...but that's where I'm coming from - I'm here because of the product and media production (not better business ideas). But thanks for the post.

I revisited and posted a couple of followups, having learned better answers. That's the primary idea. No loss to your position there. If it wasn't for control having a forum would be impossible.

I think the ideal forum method was devorak's software for Compuserve -- NavCIS was an offline browser. At $.25 a minute -- you could create and follow threads and post to them by thread subscription, and do your browsing the same way.

Meanwhile for a more modern model, epinions provides a viable alternative to Amazon, who is going over the proverbial cataract. The difference between the two is quality over quantity of reviews. epinions has far fewer, but I will never write another Amazon review, and the difference is control (of course).

The forum here works very well, so I shouldn't complain. But still there's a lot of garbage that is noise and could be cleaned out. Naturally I am interested in this because I am a KM type -- which is why I am posting. I just know there are better ways.

Eventually I will have to implement knowledge forums myself so I'm just thinking out loud, but it is a suggestion.

Genei: just something to consider ... this forum is a user feedback forum. It's not SonicFoundry's official knowlege base. The official knowledge base is very tightly controlled (only SF may post to it) and very much oriented towards pertinent facts. Maybe that's what you're looking for? This forum is for the users to interact with each other, and is therefore open to user input without being controlled.
