Subject:Phantom "Echo" On Recording

We've just replaced a bunch of PCs and reinstalled everything, so this is probably some software setting that we've overlooked, but here goes:

When we record in Sound Forge, we get what LOOKS like an echo, but isn't. In other words, if I send a "beep" into SF, the meters register that input, and then about a second later, they register it again. When the resulting file is played back, there's only one "beep", however. This doesn't appear to affect the recorded WAV file in any way; however, during a long voiceover session, it's kind of hard to tell what's actually happening with the levels, because the meters are showing the original input along with this "second" signal, and the multiple signals usually result in clip indications where clipping doesn't actually exist.

We're using an ASI 4344 card on Windows 2000 Pro SP2. There are no other channels open and/or active on our board which could cause a delay effect. We've never seen this happen before. Has anyone else run into this?

Thanks,
Scott

I'd look at the settings of the sound card first. In the Control Panel (Multimedia), check to make sure that you are using the correct device (for preferred devices) and any other setting is the same as it was before they were replaced.

Never seen/heard of this issue - but that is where I would start.

Hope this helps.
