Is there any advantage to using 32-bit (IEEE Float) temp files??? None of the help/documentation seems to address this option.

Try clicking the question mark icon and then click the option

OR

Read the copied and pasted material from said online help:

Use 32-bit (IEEE float) temp files

Select this check box if you want to use 32-bit, IEEE floating-point temporary files for audio files that are not opened in Direct mode. When the check box is cleared (or when you open a file in Direct mode), the bit depth of the temporary file will match the source file.

Yes - I have done that, so I was not completly accurate in my request: the question is... What does making the temp file 32-bit depth do for us in terms of file editing and artifact generation?

My understanding is that effect modifications are stored in the temp file, until saved. So would using the higer bit temp file yield more accurate results when finally applied to the source or new destination file, i.e., produce less artifacts then not using 32-bit temp file?

It certainly sounds like it. I would also imagine it uses more processing power, hence why it's not checked by default.

Yes, but it would be nice if the preference would save after I close! It only seems to work if I check the box manually each time I open SF.

Do you have this problem?

Hmmm...it doesn't save the setting for me either. Not sure if this was intended or not.

Yes, perhaps this is why there is not really any topic of substance on it yet: one of those "undocumented features," aka, BUG of sorts...

But I will use it whenever I edit if I remember to enable it. What a pain though if workspace opens many files from previous session!

When you record or convert to 32-bit, SF automatically uses 32-bit temp files... the option is apparently there to use for all formats, though it doesn't seem to stay active once you close.
