Dropping audio into existing video

This is a novice question but the answer eludes me in my wonky state after 1000 plus video edits. When I try to drop new audio onto an extra inserted audio track, the existing video and audio along the time line are blown away. I want to add audio to the existing, not displace it. What am I doing wrong? Thank you.

I do this a lot, yet i prefer to have autoripple on almost all the time. Turning it off to drop in each audio file, then back on again can get time consuming. So, what i do is drop the new clip onto the timeline so that it starts slightly to the right of the existing clip, then drag it back to the left until the automatic alignment snaps it into place.

Of course, this only works well if you're adding the 2nd audio as you add the original clips, while the one you're dropping the new audio on is currently the last one in the project.

I've often wished for a post-edit unripple keyboard shortcut. Like the opposite of CTRL-F.

Autoripple causes me more mistakes of the kind you describe, so I leave it off and plan ahead when I'm going to use it for one or two operations.

I remember autoripple was the subject of a major thread about 10 years ago. It was SOOOO easy for me to totally screw up a project by leaving it on for just a few minutes when not noticed. I always thought it would be good to have a flashing beacon or something while it was enabled to make me aware of the potential danger.

Some see autoripple that way. For me it saves me an incredible amount of time and effort. I have it on almost all the time and can't imagine editing without it.

I guess it depends on what you are editing. If you normally edit sequentially beginning to end, then leaving ripple on usually is valid. But editing things in different order than they were shot, I find usually gets clumsy with ripple on.
