Pinnacle Moviebox work w/Vegas without software?

I have Vegas Movie Studio 11 HD Platinum. I need to get my mini dvs captured and am going to get a Pinnacle Moviebox (with DV connection). Question - Do I need the software that's on the CD that comes with the Moviebox, in order to have it capture into Sony Vegas, or can I just plug the cables in, and let Windows (8.1) take care of it, and of course have Vegas recognize it?
Thanks.

To capture from a miniDV camcorder into Movie Studio, your computer needs to have an IEEE-1394 FireWire connection. Although newer computers often don't have a FireWire port, FireWire cards and cables can be had for about $10 on Amazon and can be easily installed.

Capturing through a Pinnacle Moviebox is a bad idea. It's an acceptable idea if your plan to edit with the software that came with the Moviebox, but not such a good idea if you plan to edit with Movie Studio. In fact, Movie Studio won't even interface with the Moviebox.

Though I suppose, in a pinch, you can capture with the Moviebox and then import the video into a Movie Studio project. But it's not the ideal way to do it and it won't give you the best quality.

MiniDV was designed to interface via a FireWire connection, and Movie Studio's capture tools were designed to capture miniDV via a FireWire connection.

The only reason I'm buying the Pinnacle is because it has firewire input. So it appears that I do have to have the Pinnacle software, or at least that's the most assured way of being able to capture. I don't get why it would be less quality though. If I imported an avi file (or whatever) into Movie Studio that I captured in Pinnacle software, why would it be any less quality than any video file I imported into Movie Studio?

FYI, I do have a tower computer with a firewire connection, which I have tried, but Movie Studio did not recognize the camera. Any idea why? That's the whole reason I'm looking for a Pinnacle Moviebox, because Movie Studio doesn't recognize my camera.

You might need to load the legacy firewire drivers. Then your camera may be recognized.

Hang on, roadstar....

Let's start at the beginning.... What cam model do you have? Is the video on the tapes SD or HD?

Movie Studio, or rather VidCap, can only capture SD video. If you have HD video on the tapes, us HDSplit to capture the video which can be used directly in MS.

Let's not go down a path you don't need to.

Using the legacy firewire drivers works for me to capture SD or HDV directly into Movie Studio v12 and v13 Platinum.
