Another Win 10 convert

Been using W10 for a while on my laptop for all the usual office stuff, plus lightweight photo editing etc. Finished a project on my edit m/c (running dual boot Win7/8.1) so decided to take the plung with the "free" deadline nearing. Absolutely pain free replacement of my 8.1 partition. Everything all still worked fine after the W10 install, inc all plugins. I've been editing all day today, inc 2 x renders without a single crash or problem on V12. Win10 system seems more stable with V12 than either of my 7 or 8.1 installations. :-)

LOVE Windows 10. I've been primarily a Mac user for the last 5 years or so, but with the abysmal changes Apple has been taking with OS X, I find my self sitting down at the HP Workstation and Windows 10, rather than the Mac Pro, lately.

It's just a clearer, more intuitive experience than Apple now. For the first time in a long time, I'm steering people to Windows rather than Macs.

I also took the plunge. So far all is well with Vegas 13, assorted plug ins and scripts, and all the other mundane stuff I do. And it boots up so quickly...

I have used every version of Windows since v1.0 and Win 10 is perhaps the best Microsoft OS ever, even better than my previous favorite, Windows 2000.

Everything except "permissions" which drive me nuts. They should have a password activated battle short to bypass all permissions period.

I let MS upgrade Windows Pro 7 to 10 tonight. It took about 20 minutes to download and about 30 to do the upgrade. So far, so good ;-)

Update: Particle Illusion (standalone version 3) went belly up on me after the Windows 10 upgrade. It deactivated its license and according to their license server I have exceeded my 3 activations. Since Wondertouch is technically out of business now, I hope that GenArts will reset my account and let me re-activate it. But, anyone using PI might keep that in mind...

Another Update: The customer support folks at GenArts replied and indicated that my serial number is no longer supported by their license server, so they provided a new one. I have to uninstall the current version on my system and install a newer version of PI along with all of the emitters. It's now up and running :-)

Just be aware with the GenArts rebranded particlillusion v3.0.9 program, I believe the previews under "Load Library" no longer shows you the previews... This is known issue and it appears that GenArts will no longer update or fix this and many other issues with pi3. v3.0.4.1 of wondertouch particlillusion still has the preview window working fine.

I decided to hold back my Windows 10- upgrade. I do not like the Grey on White color scheme they have for program windows, etc. It is much harder to see where your edges are. Since Windows 7 x64 is working great for me, I'm sticking with it.

My scheme is the same as Window 7. I guess it stayed that way since I did an update.

Just as longer as you get rid of those damn contextual Explorer columns and install ClassicShell and set it to Classic Windows menu, etc. Just like with 7 and 8 really ;-)

How do you do that? Windows explorer is really a mess as far as I'm concerned or maybe I just don't know enough about using it. E.g. multiple drive letters. If there is a way to revert back to the Win 7 look, that would be great.

Not my experience with Windows 10. I'll keep using Windows 7 on my main machine. I find Windows 10 a mess compared with Windows 7.

What is so good about it - seriously I think Windows 95 was better. I would like to like it but find no reason to do so. Please put me straight.

Yes, Classic Shell is the only thing that makes Windows 10 useable.

Can't remember. Googled it and found a pointer to a basic setting somewhere reasonably hidden.

I have made a list of tweaks I did to make Win 10 look reasonably familiar. When I have to do a reinstall (coming up because something is broken and I don't know how to fix it) it will be a big help.

I hate the flat white look of everything by default. I have put some colour back into Windows -> File Explorer, but late versions of some software have also adopted the flat white look.

I hate the way they hide stuff either to make a complex thing look simple or to save me from my tinkering, and then clutter up the screen with lists of frequently used links, but no way to distinguish between files or folders with the same name.

I can't think of single change to the interface that is better.

Well, to be fair, the notifications button gives quick access to some functions especially networking and flight mode. But I agree the whole thing is a hodgepodge.

I found Windows 10 handled 4k much better on my machine than 8.1. Been using it from the get-go.

When I first used Win 8, I couldn't get used to having no 'classic start' etc. But once I used it (because I had to) I found I liked most of what I saw.
Things I NEVER liked were the daft (DAFT) placement of the power/sleep/restart options in setup. And the fact that so many settings were 'buried'. That didn't change in 8.1. Win7 was...well what was it? Anything new there? No more reliable than XP was it? I found Vista Business to be rock solid (as opposed to the mess that was Vista Home) For me, Win 10 is the best OS MS has produced to date. It just works! It's amazingly quick to boot up, and just as fast to shut down. I LIKE the way you can organise the start with your most used progs, and all the others are just a click away. Much tidier. Ethernet network connections, WiFi, All found and working with no fuss whatsoever. All 4 of my PCs communicate with zero input from me to make that happen. One thing I don't 'get' is Cortana. Anybody here use it?

I have to say...going back to Win95 would be the tech equivalent of a hair shirt! It may have been quite a revelation at the time, after 3.1 etc, but what is there to recommend it now...in the 21st century??
JJKizak wrote on 7/28/2016, 6:04 PM
Hey, I liked 3.1. It was the last time I understood Windows.
