Framerate DVD/Blueray 50i ?

Hi there,

I've noticed that in DVD architect I can't choose any framerate higher than 25 for PAL, but my footage is 50i. The result is that scenes with panning or fast moving action looks quite choppy on the TV on playback. Isn't it supposed to be possible to put at least 50i footage on a DVD /Blueray to preserve the original quality?

Isn't 50i 50 fields interleaved = 25 frames?

"A Phase Alternating Line (PAL)-based television set display, for example, scans 50 fields every second (25 odd and 25 even). The two sets of 25 fields work together to create a full frame every 1/25 of a second (or 25 frames per second), but with interlacing create a new half frame every 1/50 of a second (or 50 fields per second)"

Arthur is correct. If your footage is really 50i, that is the same as 25 fps. So any choppy movement you are seeing is not a problem with the framerate per se. But pans and fast action can be a problem with framerates such as 25fps.

I wish the industry would make up it's mind over the nomenclature.

Sadly, i've seen 50i mean both 25fps and 50fps.
I've seen 60i mean both 29.97fps and 59.94fps. I've even seen it mean 30 and 60.

I've seen people vehemently defend both usages. I think the only safe way to phrase it is to say something like 25fps-interlaced (which would be 50 fields per second), or 50fps-interlaced (which would be 100 fields per second). That way there's no confusion.

Are there cameras that shoot 50 fps interlaced as you describe? (100 fields)

So if I understand correctly, 25fps interlaced is the same as 50i?

I have made both a Blueray and a DVD of the same footage, and I did notice that the Blueray version has this 25 fps interlaced option, but DVD only has 25 fps.

I double checked and the problem with the choppy video is only in the DVD ....
So why isnt there an option 25 fps interlaced in the DVD settings?

OK, assuming you've used a PAL DVD template to render to and a Blu-ray template to render to in Vegas (don't let DVDA render your footage). In DVDA file/properties; make sure it's set to DVD. Resolution 720x576(PAL). Frame rate 25. progressive NO. For the BD, set to Blu-ray. Resolution 1920x1080. frame rate 25 interlaced. Progressive NO. I use these settings a lot without problem. No idea why DVDA uses 25 and 25i.

If you start DVD Arch and select New for a new project, a window pops up. If you set Disc Format to DVD then under Project Video Format there are several choices but they are only 50i (25 fps interlaced) or 60i (29.97 fps interlaced) options. Those are the only options available according to the DVD spec.

If you set Disc Format to Blu-ray then under Project Video Format there are several choices with either 50i, 50p, 60i, 60p, 24p or 23.976p.

60i means 29.97 frames per second interlaced, 60 p means 59.94 frames per second progressive, but although 24p is often an abbreviation for 23.976p, in this case they are what they say they are.

@Peterduke

I have version 6 build 237, and I don't have these 50i or interlaced options with DVDs you are mentioning, which version of DVDA are you refering to?

I normally use 5.2, but 6 build 237 is identical.

Open DVD Arch Pro.
Select File>New
Select "Menu Based"
Under "Disc Format", select "DVD"
Under "Project video format", there are 12 options, all MPEG-2, various frame sizes, 60i or 50i, 4:3 or 16:9, NTSC or PAL.'

What do you see?

@Peterduke

You are right!
I was looking at another location: file, properties and then I pick DVD , in that menu you can't pick anything other then 25 framerate....

But I don't understand why there is a difference with the new project settings?
These properties are the same project settings, it doesnt make any sense?

In the field above marked "resolution", you also set whether it is PAL or NTSC. PAL is always 25 frames per second and NTSC is always 29.97 frames per second. Since you can't change the relationship you might ask why the field is included in the first place. I suppose because DVDArch also makes Blu-rays and you have more options then.
