Subject:WDM Support????

Since Sonic Foundry has seen fit to pretty much remove all support and upgrades to Vegas Audio 2.0, I've moved to Cakewalk Sonar. However, I still like Soundforge 5.0 for editing- nothing else really comes close - but I'm wondering if SF will ever decide whether or not to release SF with WDM support.

Well????? Or, do I start saving my pennies for Wavelab 4.0?

How's that cakewalk working out for ya? Instead of sonar, they should have renamed that program to "Cheese cake", because it's soooooo cheezy. BTW, the upgrade to Vegas Audio 2.0 is Vegas Video 3.0. Nothing has been abandoned.

Marc,
Nevermind the previous post, I will try to answer your question. The latest versions of ACID 3.0f,SF 5.0f and Vegas Video 3.0a all work with WDM depending on the OS you are using. If you are using XP, you have full functionality and 24/96 support. If you are using W2K, you can only use SF apps in 16bit. Even though your files may still say 24bit, an extra 8bits of useless info is tacked on in order for SF apps to open 24bit in W2K. This is not a problem for XP though, only when using W2K. Peter Haller(SF rep) has said this is a problem that Microsoft needs to fix in W2K. So, yes, you can open and use Sound Forge 5.0 from the tools menu in SONAR with the WDM drivers(16bit in W2K & 24bit in XP)I use my SF apps, as noted above, with SONAR and WDM on a daily basis in XP with no problems @ 24/44. I use the latest Delta .26 multi-client WDM drivers and use the "Share Drivers with other Programs" option in SONAR to enable me to have SONAR, ACID Pro, Vegas Video 3.0and SF 5.0 all open and using the same Delta 66 1/2 channel. Excellent performance and stability, and the audio is clear and pristine running thru my Mackie 1402 VLZ-Pro mixer.
I am currently using:
SONAR for multi-tracking digital audio, MIDI, live input monitoring of effects and using DXi/VSTi in real-time from my MIDI controller
SF 5.0 for editing my .wav files from within SONAR and for doing 24bit to 16bit-depth conversions of my SONAR projects, creating MP3's and mastering my projects using the excellent Ozone DX mastering tool.
ACID 3.0 for creating, re-mixing , and loop arranging( which I later import into SONAR)
Vegas Video 3.0 for creating and burning CD's and of course video editing.

HTH,

Billy Buck

Vegas Audio 2.0 is still a supported product.

Well, that was certainly most helpful. Thanks, RedNRoll- you've truly convinced me of the error of my ways.

Thanks for the cogent reply, Billybk.

I am using WinXP, w/Athlon 1.4GB, 1GB RAM with a MOTU2408MKII, which runs via TDIF to my Tascam DM24 and have all the software you described. In SF5.0f, I have choices on the WAV menu of "MOTU2408 A(1-8)", "MOTU2408 B(1-8)", etc., so apparently I'm in the ballpark, but I can't figure out which channels I'm able to send from.

The other problem is that I'm running 48Khz, 24bit, and everything played from SF is playing in 44.1- I mean, hey, I like the chimpmunks as much as the next guy, but....any ideas here?? Probably need to spend some time poking around with settings.

Hardly. Vegas 2.0 will no longer have updates made to it after version H, I was told by several folks "in the know". We all have to jump ship to VV3.0, and given the fact that VV3 STILL doesn't have external control capability, MIDI, Virtual Synths, ActiveX automation on effects, I can hardly see the point of spending- oh, wait- I get to spend an ADDITIONAL $199!!!! Oh, goodie!!!!

I just wish that SF would come clean with it's users. I used to love their stuff, but it's gotten so strange lately. Check the Vegas board to see what I mean.

I guess it depends on what you mean by support. If you mean that a product is still sold, functional, and registerable, the manufacturers still take and answer support calls about it, and you can upgrade to other products from it, then Vegas Audio 2.0 is still a supported product. What do you mean by support?

If you don't like Vegas 3's features for the upgrade price then maybe you can wait for Vegas 4 and keep using Vegas 2 while you're waiting. I'm sure you will still have an upgrade offer at that time. Heck, SoundForge 2 users still get a nice upgrade discount on SoundForge 5.
