POLL - Should MAGIX change the name?

chap wrote on 6/20/2016, 5:38 PM
Should Magix move forward past version 13, what do you all think about changing the name, and giving a clean start?

Personally I think that Vegas is a TERRIBLE name for my favorite software. It doesn't give any indication of what the software is for. Is it a gambling program? Is it a discounted buffet? It is at least the name of a city that half the population loves, the other half hates. Further, Vegas is certainly not known as a Mecca of film or TV production.

Since they are in the business of figuring out what to do with such beloved software, I'd say they should re-think the terrible legacy name.

Also it should be cross platform if they want to be taken seriously in production circles.

Resolve and Premiere (not necessarily better names on the whole) are both cross platform.

A rose by any name would smell as sweet.

Vegas has been around for a long time and is well known to those who love it.

Changing the name would not lead to higher sales or acceptance. It wins or fails on performance and marketing.

"Vega" is Spanish for "low fertile land". The plural is vegas.

+ 1 for PD.

Then again "Vegas Magic" is pretty cute.

The very worst thing they could do is re-brand it and call it Magix Vegas which is a real good possibility if they want to establish changes with licensing as it appears they will.

The idea of a name change goes counter to the legacy of the product history and clientele. Does anyone remember what Premiere was before the modern version of Premiere? How about the acquisition of an excellent photo editing suite that was originally by Ulead? What is it called now and who owns it now?

Name changes usually spell A drastic end to product life.

I'm just sayin', Vegas has about 1% penetration of Professional editing studios, and I think I'm being generous. Why continue a failed strategy?

Chap, the name has nothing to do with the failure of SCS to market and penetrate the competition for the pro NLE .
BUT if you DO choose to change the name to some crazy interation of Magix Vegas - the possibility of making any inroads in the legacy of what Vegas IS will be left to nothing other than a run-of-the-mill product.

Nah, the name is what it is. You have to keep it.

But I always thought it would've been fun to name Movie Studio Platinum a different name. Considering it's the less full-featured version of Vegas, they should've called it Reno.

I don't mean to burst anyone's bubble, but I do think it is rather presumptuous for anyone here to suggest a course of action for renaming Vegas. Magix bought SCS's assets and it is theirs to determine how to position them in the marketplace. I am sure that their folks are more than capable of making that decision without any input from us. What does matter are our suggestions for functionality improvements.

I like the name Vegas, always have.
John_Cline wrote on 6/21/2016, 3:03 AM
Oh, here we go again! It's just a name, in this case, it's the name of an NLE. I have never equated it with the name of the town in Nevada, that's something completely different. What name might you suggest?

They should change it from Vegas to Hollywood. That´s a step up!

"They should change it from Vegas to Hollywood."

My old Pinnacle Studio came with Hollywood FX. Do we want to confuse Vegas with Pinnacle Studio?
ushere wrote on 6/21/2016, 4:22 AM
could always call it 'the nle formerly known as vegas'....

How about "Veggix"?
(with a soft 'g' like 'vegetable')
Might perhaps tap into that vast mass market of nutritionally-conscious movie makers out there?

Still love the Vegas name., and 99% sure they will keep all the names intact.

But some other suggestions:

Magix Cinema Edit Pro.

Magix Best Video Editor Ever Pro.

How about we just keep the name Vegas and get back to editing video?

@ DGates,

I like "Magix Movie Studio Platinum Pro". "MMSPP". They can get rid of the lighter versions of Movie Studio. There are some features in Movie Studio Platinum that I like that are not in Vegas.

What features are you referring to?
Maybe a feature request is in order.

Magix Vegamatic. Add a slicing, dicing option.

They should definitely change the name: Vegas 14.

Every time I click on the Vegas icon it brings back fond memories on NABs past...

Getting booted from the Stratosphere...

The buffet at RIO...

Downtown, where my kind of people hang out...

Going to Hoover and taking the dam tour...

Seriously, it's like a mini vacay every time I edit!

If they change Vegas to one of those triple barreled names used by YouTube down-loaders and numerous file converting apps then Vegas will lose its identity and that's never great for a product even if it's not got a huge market. Better to improve how the software works rather than tinker with the name. It convinces no one.
