Subject:SF 4.0 and SF 4.5 in Windows XP

I own a copy of SF 4.5. My brother has 4.0. He recently upgraded to Windows XP and says his SoundForge stopped working. Will SF 4.0 run in Windows XP? If I upgrade my OS to XP will my version of 4.5 continue to function or will I be forced to upgrade to 5? Sonic Foundry is a good company and I'm happy to pay them money for upgrades - but I kind of got screwed into upgrading from 4.0 to 4.5 and its still left a slightly bitter taste in my mouth. I own CD-architect, and when I installed a new CD burner, CD architect wouldn't function unless I upgraded to 4.5. So I had to pay $99 for a half upgrade, knowing SF5 was only 6 months around the corner. I don't mind when I upgrade because of new features I like, but when I'm forced to upgrade because SF stops supporting and refuses to update an expensive plugin like CD architect, I feel a little cheated. This wouldn't bother me if the upgrade from 4.5 to 5 cost any less than upgrading from 2.0 - but it doesn't. I'm giving you this background because I know the obvious response will be upgrade to 5.0 and to explain my hesitancy, but I also want SonicFoundry to be aware of how some of their decisions affect their loyal customers. |

I believe 4.0 is not supported under Windows XP, but 4.5 installs and works fine. (I can't confirm this, as I use Sound Forge 5.0 with XP.) You have to realize that, from a business standpoint, it makes sense to concentrate resources on the present and future versions and make them better. Hanging back on older versions will only hurt the present and future versions. I know that sounds harsh, and I know that sometimes users feel that an upgrade is a "one step forward, two steps back" kind of thing and feel that they shouldn't upgrade if what they've got is working just fine, but we all have to move forward sometimes... Let me also mention that 4.0 was created way before Windows XP even came around. Win XP is a totally different (and IMHO, better) monster altogether OS-wise, and I personally wouldn't expect my older software to be compatible with it. (It's that "looking forward" thing again.) It might be comforting to know that, from what I've seen thus far, the next versions of Sound Forge will more than likely have the CD Architect technology built-in, as we've seen with Vegas Video 3.
