Export just chapter markers....

een wrote on 6/9/2016, 7:02 PM
Hi all,

Rendered a video and I mucked it up at the last 60 seconds or so. No biggie. Video's still good but my chapter markers didn't create as the render didn't finish.
The .slk file was created for the .ac3 file though when I rendered the audio

Anyway, is there a way to just take the chapter markers from Vegas Pro 11 (in my case) and put them into DVDA? So I don't have to labouriously enter 30+ chapter markers and names into DVDA?

Thanks!

I have never done it, but under TOOLS there is a script to export chapters.

The markers can be included in the video and/or the audio sidecar files in Vegas Pro. The default behavior in DVD Architect is to load the markers from the video file but that setting can be changed. With markers in the audio file, follow my instructions in this thread to load them into DVD Architect from the audio file without re-encoding the video file.

Also, see Gary James comments about Timeline Tools in that thread.

To rephrase the question, or perhaps ask a slightly different question, "can you export just the chapter markers if you forgot to ask for them to be exported when you rendered the video?" If not then re-rendering the audio with markers would be the way to go because in all likelihood it will be much quicker.

EDIT

No, Timeline Tools is the way to go.

Time to lash out and buy Vegasaur. I use it every day and saves hours of work.

Timeline Tools has a feature in the Markers, Regions & FX tab to export Vegas Markers. One of the options of this feature will export chapter markers to a Sony DVD Architect .SFL file which is where DVDA stores chapter markers.

I've used this script for a very long time and it works great.
Dvda Chapter From Vegas Marker

You run this and it will create an SFL file. Make sure this has the same name as your MPEG video file. So, if you have a "My_film.mpg" video file, you will create a "My_film.mpg.sfl" file. Then, in DVDA, open the project, or if the project hasn't been started, drop the video into the project. If, for some reason, the markers don't appear, click on the "Load Markers" icon above the timeline, after first double-clicking on the video file in the project area.

Gary, just used your chapter export feature and it worked great. Thanks for making this tool available for free.

Glad to hear it was helpful for you.

Gary: Timeline Tools will not export it as .sfl (only .txt). How do I get it to export as the correct file extension? And Mike, that link is no longer valid, can you please send a new one? Thanks.

Carlos Werner wrote on 3/13/2018, 12:42 PM

Yes it will! Just check "Export to DVDA.SFL file" in the "Marker & Region Options".

ringsgeek wrote on 3/13/2018, 12:56 PM

Carlos: No, it will not. I did that, it will export a marker file, but the marker file is 1KB as opposed to regular .sfl files which are usually ~10KB, depending on the amount of chapters and information, of course. In any event, when I drop the mp4 file into DVDA, and then try to create a scene selection from the file, it only creates a single scene, which is representative of the entire file, not the individual chapters. They're not broken out.

Ooops, sorry!

Vegas Pro 13

ringsgeek wrote on 3/13/2018, 3:13 PM

Yes. I saw that and definitely did that. Still no such luck.

ringsgeek wrote on 3/13/2018, 3:15 PM

For mp4 files, or for MPEGs?

ringsgeek wrote on 3/13/2018, 3:37 PM

Yes it does. But that’s not what I was saying nor did I ever imply that was my issue. I’m aware it can make a file. But what I’m trying to do is for ******MP4****** files, and for DVD Architect to be able to read said marker file for an mp4 video, rather than an MPEG.

ringsgeek wrote on 3/13/2018, 3:44 PM

Just read my follow up comments, LOL. I’m clearly asking about mp4, not MPEG. You’ll see it if you read down further.

ringsgeek wrote on 3/13/2018, 3:45 PM

For whatever reason, it will work just fine in exporting for MPEG2 files, but not for mp4 files...

ringsgeek wrote on 3/13/2018, 4:01 PM

I never said that it didn't. Look, stop arguing please David. Pointless. I came here looking for help in making a DVD-Architect-compliant file for an MP4 video. Can anyone else help me?

ringsgeek wrote on 3/13/2018, 4:07 PM

Yeah I can definitely get it to export as an .sfl file. What I’m saying is that although the file exports and its got the right extension, DVD architect will NOT read it correctly, even though I’m following all the steps. It seems to only read MPEG2-based chapter files.

Already did. It doesn't export the .sfl file correctly either for an mp4 file, where DVDA can read it.
