Full RAW CR2 Display - how?

Grazie wrote on 5/27/2016, 10:59 PM
I really have to be doing something wrong here.

RAW CR2 Image which is 4000x2248. But when I drag to T/L I'm only getting a central slice of the image - meaning, a portion of the TOP and BOTTOM is missing. I don't see any P/C cropping being instituted, nor have I got any auto crop in Prefs either.

I'm missing a RAW brain-cell 'ere.

TIA

Grazie

malowz"Since when Vegas opens CR2 files?"You want a Date for this? Can't help, other than point you at all the White Papers for VP and see if you can mine through them to get an answer to your question. What I had to do to have M$ see my RAWs was to d/l their RAW viewer thingy. If that helps you? However, seeing IS believing. This is a SG from my Open VP13 Project Media Pane:

Anyhooo... Anybody else got a reply to my initial request?

@malowz

You have to install Microsoft's camera codec package. https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=26829 Then you can show RAW files on the Vegas timeline, including CR2. However, it does not work for Windows 10. It does work for Win 7. Apparently, there is 3rd party software than enables you to do the same thing. Don't remember the name off-hand, but if you're interested, I'll look on the CC thread where it was posted.

owwww, i see now. now it can open my CR2 files also ;)

this is not a problem of "cut" raw files? I see some people on the internet with cameras that do 16:9 raw files, but they are standard raw files that "cut" top and bottom part, but depending on the viewing software, they may show all/cut image.

http://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/56257846

the image is shown with 16:9 aspect in vegas? cause 4000x2248 is used to be 16:9 right?
Grazie wrote on 5/28/2016, 3:36 AM
Actually the raw RAW CR2 is 4000x3000, it is being displayed in VP as 4000x2248. My question is why aren't I getting an option to view the FULL raw RAW aspect ratio?

So my question still stands: Why can't I see ALL the raw RAW without the top and bottom being cut off?

Grazie, this is a stab in the dark but is it possible that, in Project Properties, you have Adjust source media to better match project or render settings enabled?

Makes no difference.

Wish I can help any further with direct CR2...

Perhaps you want to try experiment converting the CR2 to DNG format, then open it on Photoshop, save as JPEG or PNG ?
See how it goes when using other image format.

Not all RAW is the same, and in fact not all flavors of CR2 are the same. Opening a given flavor depends on the native app to be installed.
For another app on the same OS to open a CR2 raw image, there has to be a communication path between the third-party and the native host app. Some third-party apps are going to be very problematic in this respect.

Now, the ONE thing that hosting Cr2 opening and closing of files shares almost universally - is requirements for an extreme amount of free memory to be present in the given OS situation..... ON board memory and memory allocation is key.
NormanPCN wrote on 5/28/2016, 2:43 PM
I would not open a camera raw file in Vegas or any app that does not have a true and full raw converter will all the necessary adjustments. And Vegas does not. Otherwise you are just getting a default conversion of the raw file which may not be optimal for any given image. The MS codec pack is just giving a default conversion.

Open the raw in something like Photoshop, Lightroom or similar that have proper raw conversion support and output a JPEG/PNG/TIF file for import into the video edit software. There are free raw converters out there and for a Canon raw CR2 file you can use Canon DPP which is free.
amendegw wrote on 5/28/2016, 2:44 PM
You should be aware that not all .CR2 files are created equal. The Microsoft Codec Pack only supports .CR2 files for a subset of Canon cameras. For example, I have 3 Canon Cameras, a 1Dx, a 7D & a 7D Mark II. I can drag the RAW files from the 1Dx & 7D to the Vegas timeline without problem. However, the 7D Mark II files cannot be placed on the timeline as Microsoft has not updated their Codec Pack to support RAW files from that camera.
