It sounds like things have gotten a bit hosed on your install. Do the following:

1) Go to Start/Settings/Ctrl Panel/Add-remove programs/--uninstall VideoFactory 2.0 from the computer.

2) Go to C/Program Files/Sonic Foundry. Delete the VideoFactory folder (if it is still there) then back up and delete the VideoFactory Setup folder (if it is still there).

3) Reinstall VideoFactory 2.0c (just the updated build of the software, not 2.0, 2.0a, or 2.0b first).

You shouldn't try to uninstall vidcap25 separately from VideoFactory. There is no uninstaller for vidcap outside of VideoFactory.

Let's see if that gets you anywhere.

Ok just done all of the above you sugested, still getting the identical message.
I can open VF fine but soon as i selct the capture icon it says that the previos thing wasnt sut down properly and would i like to shoose yes or now, doesnt matter what i chooes if comes up with the error again
When i uninstalled the Videofactory the vidcap was still in the addd/remove programmes menu, it wasnt uninstalled aswell, if i tried to uninstall it on its own it came up with cant find viccap.msi file thing, cant uninstall.

In Add/Remove programs is the vidcap application calling itself Sonic Foundry VideoCapture 2.0 (then a letter behind it)? If it is, then that is not the default vidcap version for VideoFactory 2.0.

Its a bit confusing, but VideoFacotry 2.0 hosts vidcap25, not vidcap20. Vidcap25 doesn't show up at all in Add/Remove programs as it is hosted in VideoFactory 2.0 natively and doesn't require a separate install-uninstall. The older Vidcap20 does show up separately. When you open VidCap does the application that comes up say it is videocapture 2.0 in the Help/About dialog? If it does, try just going into VideoFactory, then going to Options/Preferences/Video. The path to the preferred videocapture application should be as follows:

C:\Program Files\Sonic Foundry\VideoFactory 2.0\VidCap25.EXE

Then try running a capture and see if you get better results.

Hi and thanks again for the help
In Add/Remove progs its listed as "Sonic Foundry Video capture 2.0"

If i open up VF, then click on the capture icon i get the following message:

"Video capture has detected that it was not shut down properly, Would you like to load the previous project?"

I get the following error if i press either yes or No to the above:

"Vidcap25 has caused an error in VIDCAP25.exe, vidcap will now close"

If i go to the Options/Preferances/Video tab, the following path is in the box:

C:\PROGRAM FILES\SONIC FOUNDRY\VIDEOFACTORY 2.0\VidCap25.EXE

I have checked in the C/P`Files/Sonic Foundry/Video factory 2.0 folder and the vidcap25 application is in there and is 2.42mb in size.

Even when i uninstall VF2 the Sonic Foundry Video capture 2.0 is still in the add/remve programmes list
Im not able to tell what it says in the Help/About menu as i cant get the actual aplication window to open

I hope the above helps

Kins Regards
Simon

I think it would be best to uninstall the vidcap 20, what you are seeing in the control add/remove programs as Sonic Foundry VideoCapture 2.0. Completely uninstall that from the computer. It isn't being used by VideoFactory 2.0 at all because the app is referring to vidcap25.exe to capture.

When you get into vidcap25, after clicking past the error you are seeing, what does it list under the 'video' drop down menu as your devices to capture from? Anything? If nothing is showing, what device would you like Vidcap25 to capture from?

I am not even getting into VIDCAP25, as i said earlier when i click on the capture icon in VF2 i get the dialogue i said earlier and if i click either yes or no, it says there was an error and vidcap will close, it doesnt even opem i dont get into vidcap at all.

When i go to the Vidcap20c it says it cant uninstall it because the sfvicap.msi file is not found and it says uninstall will now terminate

I used to have VideoFactory 2.0 on Win2000 with a Pinnacle 1394 card and a Sony MiniDV HandyCam. This all worked fine. Then I moved on to other things and unloaded VF. Sometime later I upgraded to WinXP Professional and reloaded VF then upgraded to the latest version (2.0c). Now, I am unable to capture anything. I get the same initial error message that you do but am then able to get into VidCap.exe. However, at this point I just get a bunch of error messages until the program finally hangs. I sent the errors into Sonic support but they didn't recognize them. I can however, capture from the program that came with my card, and with Windows MovieMaker. So I don't know what's up. I provided all this info in the hopes that there might be some connections. The only thing that doesn't seem to work on my system is VidCap.exe

simonwim,

OK, there is definitely something hosed in there. That old vidcap20 that is in your add/remove programs giving you the error message is what I think is causing most of your problems. I'm sending you an email with some detailed instructions on what I think will help. Check this email address: simonwim@ntlworld.com.

simonwim,

I just read some of your other posts as well. I see you have upgraded to Vegas Video 3.0 now. Are we just wasting our time trying to trouble-shoot this busted vidcap20/vidcap25 on your box? You now have the much more proficient vidcap30 on your system. I would still try to follow the steps I showed you in that email I sent you to get the old vidcap20 off the machine completely, because with Vegas 3.0 you'll now have at least three differnt videocapture utilities on the box and that could lead to some redundancies you'd like to avoid.
