Suddenly, my playback in Forge 4.0 is becoming broken up and slowed. The problem gets progressively worse as I magnify the timeline. A short while back I changed the O.S. to Windows 98SE. Could it be that the Ensoniq Vivo 90 sound card wants an updated driver? I would appreciate hearing from anyone who may have had experience with this problem. I have tinkered with options/preferences/wave settings to no avail. When I don't magnify the timeline, analogue playback is still not quite free of skips and pops, and you still can't have a client listen to the track or record a quick reference cassette. The more I magnify the timeline, the worse the breakup gets, and the audio slows down too (pitch change)! I did a job three days ago, and it worked fine. Now all the saved files are playing back like this; even after a hard drive de-frag.

This sounds really familiar... I think I had a similar problem with SF4 and Win95 a few years back, but I can't remember how I fixed it. I guess that isn't much help.
I would go to Preferences (I think it's under the Options menu), and then go to the Wave tab. There you will have the ability to alter the playback buffer. This might help.

What are the specs on your computer? Since you've just upgraded to 98SE, i'm guessing you have an older model. It's also possible that when you did the upgrade there may have been a few background programs added too. Do a Ctrl-Alt-Delete to see what else is running on your computer. When you're working in Sound Forge, the only things that should be running are Explorer, Systray, and Sound Forge. Anything else that is running could be slowing your system down.
