render black at end

When rendering and NOT selecting "render loop region only", the rendered file has black frames at the end - I think up to the max length of video that was ever on the timeline.

I scanned zoomed in at the end, and there is nothing there.

The only thing in this black extension area are some markers, but none at the very end.

Specifically, on the last instance, I deleted about 20 minutes from the front of the timeline, CTRL-A to select all, and dragged the remaining video to the beginning of the timeline. But render went to where the video was first laid down on the timeline.

This has happened twice now.

The render progress window doesn't say how long it thinks the video is going to be, so it's not easy to detect this.

I can obviously always use a loop region, but I shouldn't have to.

This is with the latest version 13 build, since I've only had Vegas Pro 3 months.

It doesn't always happen, but it might always happen when the video on the timeline is shortened; I could experiment with that.

Is there at least any way to see how long Vegas believes the video is?

Thanks.

You've got "something" on the timeline after the end of the video.
A mrker, perhaps? Zoom in and figure out what it is.

Yes, as I said, there are 4 markers in this black area. But no video or audio. And no marker at the very end of the rendered black.

I just re-edited to say the black area was dragged to the front after CTRL-A to select all. There is nothing on the timeline in this black area except the markers, and markers don't render.

since you have markers in the black area, Vegas thinks this is an active video area. Delete the markers and it will work correctly.

There is no mystery.

ZOOM IN on the timeline and delete or trim back everything past the end of your last video frame, That means markers, effects, keyframes, envelopes, and event edges. If there was nothing there, it wouldn't render black frames. You can take that to the bank.

Then go 20 minutes downstream from the end of your video and delete whatever litter you left there, too.

Consult your program tutorials to find out how to move markers, regions, and envelopes with your grouped events.

Ctrl+End (or the Go to End button) to go to end of project.

Specifically, have a look at auto-ripple. Best to leave it switched off if you are unfamiliar as it can cause unintended chaos, but when you do a Ctrl+A to select all then toggle it on and select the last option "all tracks markers and regions" and everything including the markers will move in sync; but be aware that the markers jump into their new positions moments after you release the mouse rather than whilst you are moving it. Then switch auto-ripple back off STRAIGHT AWAY. Don't forget!

Simply pressing the Go To End button or Ctrl+End will move the cursor to where Vegas thinks the video finishes.

Vegasaur has some options to move specific parts of your video rather than Select All or laboriously selecting parts one by one.

I sometimes add a little black at the end by placing an empty marker there instead of inserting empty events.

This is OT:

When looping in a player, we often prefer no black frames between plays.
In addition to cutting at a program frame, the usual renderers need to have b-frames turned off altogether.
This will increase the chances that an MP4 will loop with fewer blank frames at the loop point (can't guarantee that there won't be at least one frame skip).
