The Future of this forum and staying connected

VMP wrote on 4/15/2016, 5:30 PM
Dear Users,

Like the most of you here, there is no need to explain why love this forum, already since the day I have joined it back in 2002.

Now that Peter has left the forum too: http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/forums/showmessage.asp?messageid=942775

I wonder what the future of this forum is and how long it will be available to us.

Worried about this I made an offline backup of this precious forum for my personal use/keeping/reference (offline in my computer).

Here is a scenario that I hope would not happen but:

In case SCS decides to shut down this forum then I hope we get a warning beforehand because I am willing to host this forum with their permission elswere.
But In case this forum gets shut down without any warning, then the backed up info could be used like articles.on a website for future reference.

My question to you, there are various users like, Farss Bob, Grazie, Musicvid, Old smoke Ushere, set and many more that I would like to stay connected with (even if this forum suddenly would not be there anymore)

How can we do this?

Most of you have no contact info on your profiles, looking you guys up with alias wouldn't help either I am guessing.
You can private message me anytime.

Hope this scenario never happens, this is just a precaution.
Here is hoping SCS wil last forever here.

It doesn't really cost Sony anything for them to leave this forum running. I expect it to be here for awhile. Although, if they were to peruse the topics, there are plenty of off-topic threads that make the forum feel like a grab bag. That's usually an early sign that a product-centric forum is losing it's core usability.
videoITguy wrote on 4/15/2016, 5:44 PM
The life of the forum remains with new releases of products, and so if that declines the use and need of the forum will decline as well. I am old enough to recall many excellent forums over the years (recall Pinnacle Systems?) which have come and gone.

How long the forum remains intact is probably left to a lot of variables - but it is NOT a major expense for SCS. Other factors will convene on the demise, and we saw some hint of that today.

Those users who move on to Grass Valley or whatever will just do that. Pick your favorite.
VMP wrote on 4/15/2016, 5:55 PM

Indeed I agree with you both, cost-wise this text only forum doesn't need to cost much for SCS.

But make sure to backup info that you would like to keep or refer often.

Just imagine that you visit this forum tomorrow and it was suddenly gone.
That what you miss is what you would need to backup.

For me the contact with you guys is as precious, so a forum for the members to be together again would have to be made too, and they would need to know that there is a new place.

But like you guys say, lets hope that scenario doesn't happen in our lifetime.

at least there's still plenty of life in this forum, even if it's questioning its own survival ;-)

i' also subscribed to the cat forum:

http://community.sony.com/t5/Catalyst-Software/bd-p/SonyCreativeSoftware

which seems pretty desolate.

i'd be in for some alternative if this forum should ever disappear....

Thanks ushere,

I have noted your web url, in case this forum ever does disappear then I'll contact you to join after rebuilding the SCS society :-D.

To misquote Mark Twain:

Rumored since the 1980's, Sony divisions are like tribbles and schmoos. Kill one, and three more take their place.

One option is to move to the Creative COW Vegas Pro forum. I know some of you already help out over there but for those who have not used it, it is a very nice community of Vegas Pro users helping other users.

No worries. I just got back from 10 years into the future in my DeLorean. The forum is still up. I took a screenshot:

I remain optimistic - one more iteration of Vegas would be great, but SCS, who have very thoroughly disproved many early naysayers when they bought Vegas etc. from Sonic Foundry, are still here.

It will never be universally acknowledged, but we know Vegas was simply the best.

All we can hope is that the same philosophy has continued through to the Catalyst Suite, which I have already bought, more as an expression of solidarity than a business decision !

Like it DG :) :)

And, yes, this forum is far too valuable to lose both for its existing content and for the advice which is sop readily offered on a day by day basis. It complements Creative Cow which is also good in so many ways.

Without any future developments of Vegas, it's inevitable that this forum will die on it's feet - you can already see it happening. Less and less new users, and the forum seems much less lively than it was back when I first joined. There'll be a few old stagers that will hang on though I'm sure - including me. :-)
VMP wrote on 4/17/2016, 8:09 PM

I wonder how many users there are on this forum some forums do show that.

I do believe that there are many users that just read and don't post (they probably learn enough from just reading the posts).

DGates, very clever. No wonder you edit video.

As I've said in the past, I am very happy working with V9 and that version is now, what, six years old? That would be like working with V13 in the year 2021. What would force me to an alternative NLE would be workgroup, hardware, or software incompatibility. Or if some other breakthrough product demonstrated superior workflow.

If "active development" were to cease then surely Sony could keep a basic support structure in place with perhaps just a couple of staff, assuming there was some sort of continuing revenue stream or just for the sake of goodwill. And I'm sure the number of actual users is multiple times the official number, given how common cracked versions are in many countries. Vegas is well-regarded by a great many folks.

OMG this is hilarious! Thank you for the laugh. This is genuinely funny.

However...

"It doesn't really cost Sony anything for them to leave this forum running."

true, but I recently came from a community of users where the host shut down the forum without notice - and these were paying users. They got refunds, which is exactly all they were entitled to legally. But they were pi$$3d as you can imagine. No one allowed them to make backups of anything because, just like here, the company owned the forum and absolutely everything in it.

So if there's anything you like here, copy and paste it elsewhere if you think the forum is soon to be gone.
VMP wrote on 4/20/2016, 7:25 PM
Be sure to backup your serials too 'my account'-> 'my software', only you can backup that.
You can copy paste that into a text doc. That is always a good thing to do.

very good advice there vmp!

VidMus wrote on 4/20/2016, 9:26 PM
@ VMP

If I remember correctly, the software must call home to complete the installation. So while it is a must that one has all of their serial numbers, what good does that do if one should need to re-install on a new system build?

Goes to show how poor my memory is getting. I just recently re-installed on a new system build.

Anyway, if SCS does fold on Vegas, I hope they will at least release a final build that does not need to call home upon re-installation. Ulead did that. With my learning disability, I am not going to learn a different NLE.
