TimeLine Tools makes TMPGEnc Authoring .keyframe

dxdy wrote on 1/15/2016, 10:31 AM
For those who use TMGEnc Authoring Works instead of DVDA to make DVD or BluRay disks (which I do to be able to create pop up menus on BR):

The latest version of TimeLine Tools from Gary James has a new feature - it will output Vegas markers and their names to a .keyframe file in the format used by TMGEnc Authoring works.

In TLT version 1.0.64, look under the Markers,Regions & FX tab, then in the lower left corner check "Export to TMPGENC file". Click the "Export Selected Markers & Regions" button. Make sure Mode is set to "Markers", and Format to "Frame Number".

Thanks Gary for a great time saver.

Thanks dxdy for the tip.

Another reason to use TAW is that it avoids the skip chapter bug with older Panasonic Blu-ray players. And it also makes BDs from HDV without recompression.

That's a very useful tip...and big thanks to Gary for producing it! :-)

I added the new export feature as part of a bug fix related to exporting Vegas Markers to DVDA .SRT files. The person who reported the bug told me how he was using my Export Markers to a Text file feature, then modifying the text file so the Markers could be imported into TMPGENC. So much of what was needed to created a compatible .Keyframe file was already in the code, it only required minimal changes to add the new export format. I'm glad to hear this new feature is helping people with their Vegas editing tasks.

Forgot to ask...how do you import it IN to TAW??

Anyone.....?

Very easy, at least in Version 4 that I have. It's been a while, so I checked. Just make sure that the file with the keyframes is the same name as your video file and that it has the extension .keyframe. When you add the file, it will ask you whether you want to import the keyframe info? Enter yes and you're done. To check, simply edit the clip and the keyframe info should show up in the left column. BTW, you can also export such keyframe information using Vegasaur, which is what I've done in the past, although you will have to create a custom format. It's just a list of frame numbers. If you're interested, I can share that with you. Hope this helps.

Not working for me. I don't get any "import the keyframe info?" but I see a very brief window which says "importing chapter info" for about 1 second. When I go to the clip and chapter edit window though there are no chapters listed on the left - other than the normal one at the beginning. :-(
I'm using V 5.2.2.6 though which may do this automatically(or is supposed to)

What's your alternative method using Vegasaur?
Arthur.S wrote on 2/21/2016, 10:26 AM
OK, found how to import them manually. Only problem now is TAW imports them with 'auto name' instead of keeping the original chapter/marker names. Probably buried in the prefs somewhere...
Arthur.S wrote on 2/21/2016, 10:37 AM
After all that, just realised that the chapters/markers imported are all over the place - nothing like the times on my Vegas TL. Sheeesh.......

In the source tab, double click on the clip to which you are adding markers

The Clip Editing window opens. Click on the Edit Menu button in the lower right corner.

Drop down opens, select Import Keyframe List.

File select dialog window opens, choose the appropriate keyframe file.

If this is not working for you, take a look at the keyframe file, and make sure it looks something like this:

0
#Name="Name of marker"
(blank line)
1234
#Name="name of second marker"
(blank line)

etc., etc.

In the above example, 0 and 1234 are frame numbers. Do not include the quotation marks on the #Name= lines.

Can you post one of the keyframe files for me to look at?

Edit: Remember in TAW that each clip needs its own keyframe file and import process.

@ ArthurS

Here's how to do it in Vegasaur. The final window should look like this.

To do this, assuming you have markers with labels, select the Export/Import Tab for Markers. Select markers and Custom Format. Then left click on the Favorites button and select Frame Numbers. The first two lines will appear. Then type "#Name=", left click on Macros, select Label, and New Line twice. Select Absolute Frames as your timecode format and in the extension box type "keyframe" (no quotation marks). At that point, it should look like the window above. And finally, left click on Favorites again, and select "Create", enter a name and save. At that point you can load this template at any time. Hope this helps. BTW, I learned that TAW 4 does not support import of Chapter names, only location.

I think the Name line needs a pound sign # in front of it.

I use TAW 5, so the names are imported.

Thanks for the advice guys. I've headed on with the 'ol manual method for this project, but I'll try again on the next one.

You're right. I made changes to my above post. It still doesn't import names into TAW 4 but it does import names into TMPGEnc's MPEG Smart Renderer 4.
