New MOTU 896 USB Hybrid - no play

Doug_Marshall wrote on 1/10/2016, 11:14 AM
Hi all,

Anybody have a clue? I got this do-everything MOTU for on the road recording. However, when I go to play a file in Vegas or Sound Forge the cursor simply sits there - no sound, no movement in the video. Since I can't get playback going I haven't bothered with recording yet...

The device shows up fine in the options and Windoze reports no problems either.

This usually happens when the audio device is not configured to match the sample rate and bit depth of the Vegas Pro project and Vegas Pro cannot tell it to switch modes for some reason.

This is usually caused by using the audio device for Windows sounds. Windows sounds are recorded at 41.1K/16bit and audio for video is 48K/16bit. The device must be able to quickly switch back and forth between this rates and some are not able to.

The solution is to NOT use your professional MOTU audio device for making stilly sounds in Windows and instead, get a cheap set of speakers and connect them to the motherboard audio to hear Windows sound which leaves the MOTU device free for audio in your professional applications. This is how I had my PC set up with my M-Audio Firewire 410. It only was used for Vegas Pro and SoundForge and never for Windows sounds.

Thanks! That's sounds like a good clue. I'll give it a go and report back.

What JonnyRoy suggests is good information, that also holds true for devices like Blackmagic hardware. The manufacturers create a device that works, and then start selling as fast as possible. Things like auto format selection and troubleshooting those issues are sometimes never addressed, as their clients are generally technical.

One alternative in line with JonnyRoy's suggestion is to convert all your system sounds to format that you record and use the most.

I have a sneaking suspicion though that a device like that should be using the ASIO interface, and a driver or issue with ASIO could be causing your issue. I would verify your ASIO operation with a utility like:

http://www.centrance.com/downloads/ltu/

If that works, then maybe check your ASIO settings under Vegas Preferences>Audio Device > Advanced >ASIO

Read page 7 of your 896 manual and make sure your settings are correct.

Possibly try interfacing the unit using the ADAT optical interface, which is an alternate connection mode to Firewire. ADAT supports 8 CH of PCM. This does require a motherboard with an upscale integrated audio chip that has an optical ADAT interface.

Verify your Firewire interface card is TI or Texas Instruments based and not some other manufacturer.

After having people come late to meetings and then create a commotion when they boot their laptop with the Windows Startup sound enabled, I always stop the meeting and remind the intruder that sounds are configurable in all Microsoft Operating Systems.

None of my Windows systems make any sound at all.

Thanks astar and JonnyRoy,

I did get things at least on the right track today. I haven't had much time to test but I spent a while on the phone with MOTU tech support - they were really responsive, BTW - and the suggestion that ultimately made the difference was to go to Programs and Features in Windows Control Panel and select the repair option the MOTU installer. Sounds like they my have a problem with their installer thingy. Anyway, after that, Vegas played audio without issues. I'll be testing it further, to be sure. Thanks guys, for your suggestions. It means a lot!
