If i recall correctly, the non-Pro surface tables don't run x86 Windows, so therefore won't run any x86 software. I believe they only run apps from Microsoft's App Store. Maybe that's changed in version 3, but i don't know.

As Kelly pointed out, the Intel Atom 7 is an ARM processor NOT an x86 processor so it won't run any Windows applications any more than you can run Mac applications on an iPad. ARM and x86 are completely different architectures.

If you're talking Surface 3, it runs Windows 8.1, no RT. RT died with Surface 2. That said, running Vegas on an Atom processor is probably unexciting, at best.

Even if it ran it would be agony.

I wouldn't consider Braswell either. It's basically an atom upgrade that does run x86. But still very weak compared to even the low end Haswell/Skylake cores.

When all is said and done even with GPU assist, Vegas very much like to eat CPU compute. For a happy Vegas and good experience you have to feed the beast lots of wide, high frequency cores.

The wider the better. ie Skylake is wider than Haswell which is wider than Sandy Bridge which is MUCH wider than Atom. Atom and Braswell were designed for very low power applications, from phones to tablets to the weakest laptops. Skylake, Haswell... on the other hand were designed for desktops and powerful laptops and scale down to ultra portables. You want to start at the top and scale down in CPU power, not the reverse. That means Skylake/Haswell clocked down to the thermal envelope of the mobile device it resides in.

@JohnnyRoy

Surface 3 uses the Atom Cherry Trail.

Surface 3 runs Windows (64 bit), not WinRT.

4 gb mem is max.

Vegas will run, but don't expect much.

I have the fastest Surface Pro 3 with Windows 10 and occasionally use Vegas on it, usually with external USB drives, to work with a client at their office. It runs ok, but not much screen space, unless you connect it to a larger monitor.

I haven't tried it with multi cam or really complicated projects.

Someone on this forum posted a while back about using the stylus with Vegas, including writing titles by hand, but I stick to the mouse with Vegas.

Thanks all. I was only considering it for my daughter, who only does small vegas projects. She needs a very compact light weight laptop and it would be nice if it could do some simple audio and video editing along with MS Office and social media. Kind of leaning toward the Lenovo U31 at this point.
