Potential bug in VP13 Build 453

OldSmoke wrote on 11/25/2015, 11:32 AM
There seems to be a bug in VP13 Build 453 that doesn't exist in the previous build (428?).

Test:
1) Use two different video clips on different video tracks.
2) Crop the top event to half of its width and let it change the aspect ration. (That should give you a half cut of the video centered on the screen.)
3) use track motion on the same track and move the halved video to the left side so that the underlying video will also be halved on the right.
Playback the timeline and let me know if all is working correctly.

I get a very wired preview window with the underlying video event showing all sorts of errors and flickering.

So far, this only happens with the latest build 453 and different drivers for my R9 290. I tried drivers from version 14.4 up to the latest and in both, Win7Pro and Win 10 Pro.

I tried it and it works OK for me with my Nvidia 650. I couldn't look at your screenshot. It would not let me copy. Do you have the same problem with GPU off? I had a similar problem http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/forums/showmessage.asp?forumid=4&messageid=929218 some time ago trying to create vertical thirds. I reported it to Sony and they confirmed the bug. Works OK with GPU off. They also said that it should work OK in v428 with GPU on..

Not seeing that here, not a bug to how i see it either, it then has something to do with
your Radeon R9 290 Card

I see identical behavior with GPU acceleration of video processing turned on under Options > Preferences > Video. Behavior is normal with GPU set to Off.

Build 453, Radeon HD 5700 series.

I don't have any earlier build on hand to test, but if you don't see it in 428 and there's a confirmed bug that doesn't affect 428, I'd guess it's a safe bet them being related.

I think it is only AMD cards. I have had a few issues with panning (like you describe) with my AMD R9 390. The only fix was to disable the GPU and use CPU only.
OldSmoke wrote on 11/25/2015, 2:58 PM
I narrowed it down a bit. Track Motion alone is fine. Pan/Crop seems fine as long as the aspect ratio is maintained. Once I use a different aspect ration the bug is back. But, only if the height remains the original height. For example, in a 4K (3840x2160) project, if I use a different aspect ration and set the height to 2160.1 instead of 2160.0, the bug is gone.

Yes, that seems to be similar but I can see that it happened for you with an Nvidia card and the Intel HD4000 at that time?

Do you still have the same system setup? If yes, can you try my "work around" and set the video height off by 0.1 from the actual height?

@old smoke

Yes, I still have the same configuration. I'm using the Nvidia card for GPU. Finally found the test project file and tried your "work around". Started with the center third since that was the one fouled up--nothing. Then the right third--nothing. And finally the left third--bingo, the bug disappeared and the three vertical images displayed correctly. I tried a few more times just to make sure. It didn't make any difference whether "maintain aspect ratio" was selected or not. As I recall, the bug in that thread was verified by contributors with AMD GPUs as well.

Very interesting. How did you ever discover that "work around"? And more importantly, what does it all mean? Having found a solution to the issue I was having, I think I'll add a post to that thread with your work around. Excellent work.

I did one more test today. This bug only affects the height not the width. When I crop the event to half the height and leave it at the original width it all works.

@wwaag
The first thing I wanted to know whether it is caused by the Pan/Crop or the Track Motion, that was easy to test. The next step was to figure out if a simple picture in picture effect would also be affected but it wasn't. That meant it had to do with the way it is cropped. So I went back to the original test and just simple reduced the height by a slight amount, I used the down button and the bug was gone. So I thought "let's try the smallest amount" and that is 0.1 and that worked too. As long as you change the height by +/-0.1 it will work.
I believe that has to do with the way the frame or aspect ratio is calculated inside the GPU and maybe a rounding error or difference... I am not an expert in that area.
It's hard to say who is to blame but it works in Build 428 and maybe lower but not in 444 and 453; VP12 is not affected either. So my guess is it's a VP bug rather then a AMD driver issue. Judging from your earlier thread, we will never see a fix for that.

I noticed that the project PAR needs to be the same as the top layer footage PAR. If they're not the same it doesn't seem to matter.

Happens with mixed footage too.

Also, check this out.First image is the footage on the left.
http://s1373.photobucket.com/user/the_happy_friar/media/messup1_zpsimz5i85l.jpg.html[/link]

Now I move the cursor to the right part with the generated media.

Now I delete the top most footage on the left & I even play the TL. Now it shows this.
http://s1373.photobucket.com/user/the_happy_friar/media/messup3_zpsqbci9a7l.jpg.html[/link]

And yup, disabling the GPU in the preferences eliminates it. I tried disabling/enabling settings on the AMD controls but didn't help.

I am starting to think that maybe it was all for nothing (well may not nothing, but for very little gain) that I spent so much time this summer researching and purchasing a powerful GPU. Seems that there is more stability just having Vegas use the CPU alone to built the frames.
