Subject:Acid pro 7 - When Recording, Popping Sound appears

Anyone,

I have a Windows 10 machine running Acid Pro 7e with a 2.41 GHz CPU and 4 GB of RAM & 1TB of disk. I'm connected to a Behringer X32 via ASIO4ALL driver. I'm recording worship services where I use 28 channels. My sample rate is 512/ 44,100 / 16 Bit.

When recording, everything starts off fine, then 13-15 minutes into the recording, a cracking, popping sound begins to grow to the point you can't hear the audio over the popping/crackling sounds. You have to stop the recording. start over where you left off and then 13-15 minutes later it starts again. Any guidance on what to clean this up would be appreciated.

Why are you using ASIO4ALL?

Why aren't you using the ASIO drivers from the Behringer X32.

I'm guessing that if you use the ASIO drivers from Behringer X32 your problem will go away.

1. What Johnny said
2. Try 1024 instead of 512
3. 4 gigs of ram is kinda skimpy for 28 channels

The Behringer X32 drivers have not output so that we can monitor our recording. Only see input not any output for the Behringer X32. If I'm doing something wrong, I would prefer to use the X32 but it is not working. Let me know your thoughts

In Acid Pro, when I select "Preferences" and the "Audio Device" I see only the Behringer 32 channels; there is no output for 'output' to monitor or playback. So you see the meters going but you can 'hear' no sound coming out of the output.

If I'm doing something wrong, please advise. The Asio4All give me all of the inputs plus the external output devices to my hardware.

You should monitor the output from the device. In other words, plug headphones or speakers into the Behringer and monitor from there. I do all of my monitoring directly from my audio device hardware.

You are forgetting that ACID Pro is a 32-bit application and can't see more than 4GB no matter how much RAM to add to your system.

@ Johnny ... can't see more than 4GB

Maybe not, but at least he'll be able to walk around with his head held high knowing he's one of the power users. :-)

JR, thx for your feedback. Regarding: "You should monitor the output from the device", we can't do that for we have a LIVE sound mix going on and we want a separate recording mix different from the Live sound mix. Acid give us a digital mixer to mix our sound separate from the Live mix going on from the Behringer Digital mixer.

Sooo, I'm looking to monitor my Acid mix and seeing what you said, there is no output from the X32 2.23 drivers from Behringer. So we are using the ASIO4ALL drivers which has an output driver to monitor our mix. Are we doing this wrong for I would prefer to use the Behringer Digital drivers but I can't monitor the live recording nor the playback does not work either.

@ When Recording, Popping Sound appears

This thread is confusing. I thought it was about pops and clicks. Did my suggestion to increase the buffers from 512 to 1024 have any affect on the pop and click problem?

This message is about the pops & clicks. I will increase the buffers from 512 to 1024. Secondary questions was is there a way that I can use the Behringer X32 ASIO drivers instead of the ASIO4ALL drivers for playback and monitoring recording, but the answer that I'm getting is Behringer has no outputs to the computer device. So I think the answer is NO.

Appreciate your help and I'll let you know the results of my testing

If the noise problem goes away at 1024, you may have latency issues. If that's the case, reduce the buffers by 64 each time until the noise returns. Fine tune from there. It's a pain but you'll only have to do it once. Good luck.

@ClipMan

The reason I didn't think it was a buffer size problem is because it takes 15 minutes before ti starts. Usually a buffer size problem is heard almost immediately but anything is possible.

@mianoel123

The problem is that the Behringer X32 is not a full audio device (as you have seen). It is only meant to send input to a computer assuming that the output would be monitored via a sound system. You are trying to make a sub-mix which complicates things significantly.

The best that you can do is monitor the levels via the VU meters on each track in ACID so that they don't peak and mix it later after the live record is complete when you do have an audio device with outputs available. If for nothing else but to see if using the Behringer ASIO driver fixes the problem.

You could be right but checking it out anyway is a good move. BTW, we still refer to the book you wrote on Acid. It helped us get started.

Wow, I'm glad to hear that. Iacobus and I put a lot of time into that book. I'm glad its helping people out.

Thanks Brian!

@JR,

That is very disappointing if we can't monitor the live mix. We replaced an analog mixer with this digital one hoping to separate our Live sound mix with our recording mix LIVE, then we can go back and edit later. Sometimes, ear monitoring is best outside of watching the meters. But if the Behringer limits us, that is disappointing. The ASIO4ALL does that for us but let me check the buffer size.

Thx dudes

Does Windows handle 32-bit apps so that they have first choice on the 4GB available to them, by bumping 64-bit apps and OS RAM usage up above the 4GB 'barrier' ?

Update:

Testing but Buffer Size at 2048 and the devices at 44,100 Hz, 16 bit seemed to fix the issue; running recording at 40 minutes now with no popping or crackling. Will keep monitoring but that seemed to fix it.

Wish Behringer ASIO X32 drivers included an output to the device for I would prefer to use that instead of ASIO4ALL for my submix for recording separate from our Live sound mix.

Thx guys

A buffer size of 1024 gives you about a 23ms latency value. At 2048, you're looking at almost 50ms. This is noticeable in certain functions and an optimized ASIO driver would have helped. If latency isn't an issue, then you're good to go. Glad it worked out.

I'm glad to hear that increasing the buffer has fixed it. I wouldn't have thought that was the problem.

Did you contact Behringer and ask about how to use their mixer in the way that you would like? Maybe they have a workaround?

Yes but they haven't responded as of yet

@JR

Yes, they communicated to me that the X-USB driver is working properly and it is something with ACID that is blocking the playback/recording . I have no idea what it is
