Premiere similar to Vegas

winrockpost wrote on 11/7/2015, 6:17 PM
I have the cc package and have not messed around with premiere for a while, all the vegas going away stuff I figured I would update it and play around..lol, they have incorporated many vegas features which did not used to be there... pretty amazing Sonic Foundry after all these years you did have the work flow right...forget the ole source in out stuff,, drag on the timeline and trim there, change the short cut key for razor to s from c and you have split etc, etc ..Complements to my favorite editor, sonic foundry not sony...will still be using vegas mostly, but nice to know if in the futureI have to use adobe ,can set things up to be a little less painful.

If they could just get the navigation right, I'd spend more time with it. Sony mastered the center to zoom, and being able to click anywhere and just scroll to zoom with the focus being centered. If only CC, FCP, Pro Tools, Logic, Ableton and anything else would follow suit, life would be so much simpler.

I totally agree. Nothing beats the zooming in Vegas. And Acid too for that matter.

Great point. Could never understand why no once ever copied Vegas/Sound Forge zooming abilities.

I downloaded the Premiere CC trial again and it's still way off from what Vegas can do in a blink of an eye. I must admit, I am not good with it but that's exactly the point, it isn't intuitive at all. So a few questions here:

How do you make a multicam timeline from clips that cant be lined up by time code, where the only reference would be in the audio or just simply video; if you use cameras that don't have gen lock or even free run timecode?

How do you apply FX on the track or media level?

Totally agree. Reaper, the Audio DAW uses the zoom wheel feature ala Vegas, what a difference that makes. It amazes me that so few programs have adopted this. Kind of a dealbreaker for me.

@OldSmoke - you can't plain and simple with regards to apply FX to a track. Given the resources Adobe has, you'd think they would have done that - apparently not.

With regards to Multi-cam, it's a PITA to do but there are tutorials on how to do a multi-cam project. I've done a grand total of one.

I'm still debating on the Vegas Pro route and possibly Catalyst Edit as I'm in between projects so I have some free time but PPro is looking less appealing all the time now.

I know I know... I've been told that I'm looking for a magic bullet - at one time it was Vegas Pro, now I struggle with committing to it after having been burned so many times in the middle of paying projects.

@Cliff

For my projects multicam is important and I don't always have access to cameras with gen lock, doesn't exist on a GoPro for example.

I know Vegas isn't perfect but it still remains the fastest NLE in terms of getting things done; IMO.

@OldSmoke - I agree on how efficient Vegas Pro is for editing - that has been my assessment - it's the overall stability I've had issues with (bitten several times - very shy about committing to the software). For some of the work I shoot, I have had a need to use LUT's and Vegas didn't provide that option, but now that Vision Color has created the LUT plugin for Vegas Pro 13, I find myself delving more into Vegas again. I use Magic Bullet alot in Premiere Pro in addition to their Denoise plugin - Tough pill to swallow having to purchase new plugins for Vegas Pro - especially Denoise (I deal with DSLR sensor noise quite a bit when shooting at higher ISO's). And I do find the ability to open multiple timelines withing PPro an asset since I make variations of edits for projects depending on clients needs.

I think one of the biggest hurdles is my unlearning alot of PPro habits as I delve back into Vegas Pro - in addition to trying to wrap my head around Catalyst Edit (if I choose to go that route). I still haven't decided yet on which way to go, but I do find myself wanting to avoid Adobe more and more.

Cliff, don't think it will take you too long to "wrap my head around Catalyst Edit " not much there to wrap around...it a baby....
ddm wrote on 11/11/2015, 7:21 PM
I just installed the new Catalyst Edit demo, NO scroll wheel zoom. What? Are the same guys who wrote Vegas writing Catalyst? The Madison guys?
set wrote on 11/11/2015, 9:22 PM
Ok, so how you do the zoom in and out in Catalyst Edit?

I just edited my first full project in PP and have to say it was a pretty simple transition from Vegas. I'm a LONG time Vegas user - like 10+ years... Many things that PP does better & Many things Vegas does better.

The response time on PP is top notch. Extremely quick to launch. The Bins are lovely. Nested Timeline sequences save a ton of time. Ease of simple color correction is much simpler / quicker. After Effects integration huge plus.

The Vegas pros: Center zoom with mouse, Click anywhere on timeline to move playhead, Non-split timeline (very fluid), ability to loop a clip simply by dragging it out. Instant crossfades.

As for Catalyst, it looks like it will ultimately become a Vegas replacement as the new Catalyst feature set is targeted directly at Vegas.

A long long way to go. Unless I've missed something, you can't even record audio in Catalyst - a pretty fundamental difference !

it's because Vegas was originally an audio tool... not a video editor.
Wonder if they make Catalyst 'Audio' for that purpose? :)

Hodges,

I've had the same experience. Premiere is actually a really nice editor these days and my system runs it much better than Vegas. I'm still on CS6 due to my aversion to the "slave cloud". Still love some of the Vegas features but since Vegas appears to be dead in the water well...
Silverglove wrote on 11/13/2015, 12:29 AM
For now, I'll stick to Vegas. Too stubborn to give up the lightning fast workflow. On our fourth season of a TV show we produce, shoot, and edit. We shoot on a Tuesday and the show airs on Fridays. I handle every aspect including mixing the live performances which I do on Vegas as well. Now way I'd get the show turned around that fast without the scroll to zoom and "S" to split ;)
Cliff Etzel wrote on 11/13/2015, 8:58 PM
Hold Alt Key and zoom where mouse cursor is placed using scroll wheel, Press "C" to activate razor tool, click at spot to split clip. Not that much different than using Vegas Pro.
Silverglove wrote on 11/15/2015, 2:00 PM
Thank you Cliff! Much appreciated. But it's not really the fact that I don't know how to do it, I just think it's extremely slow. I personally believe there's difference between acclimating to a new way of working and something that just doesn't quite work as well. I do all all of my editing/trimming on the timeline. I don't choose clips, mark ins and outs and then assemble. I like to work very very fast and Vegas allows me to do that, Adobe doesn't. Just the apparent minuscule steps of having to move the cursor on the upper part of the timeline when I'm focused on a small clip of audio/video 15 tracks down is slow no matter how you slice it, then choosing tools to cut/spilt. Yes once I choose the razor tool I can move along and split my tracks, but unless I'm doing something wrong, the play head doesn't move so you really don't know what frame you are cutting at after the initial cut. You'd have to repeat that process of moving the playhead again. Sure, it might sound like a lame complaint, but it's mine. If nothing else, just let me choose the way I want to work. Let me completely customize my work flow.
