Freezes during Render of MPEG-2

Sony Movie Studio 12 Platinum build 1184

Have created multiple projects .... each includes a single MPEG video (1920x1080,25p) and one of more MP3 audio files on single audio track. The videos & MP3's play fine in isolation.
The individual projects range in duration from 10 - 25 mins.

I have only managed to render 2 so far .....
The render template is:
Main Concept Blu-ray 1920x1080-50i
Only change to it is to select '2 -pass' and set Max/avg/min rates to ... 25,20,15 Mbps

The failure happens at different times .. so not related to one particular frame, for example tried one project 3 times - 3 different failure points. My PC is pretty reasonable spec, certainly not a cheap laptop.
W7 64 bit - Quad core i5, 32GB RAM,2 TB HDD, has a good GPU ... but not option to use with this render template.
Nothing else running ... even turned off anti-virus and LAN card.

Tried one suggested fix of holding CTL+Shift & double click shortcut - to clear cache & rest defaults.

When it fails ... same each time get pop-up window stating “Movie Studio has stopped working” if I look at details same each time:

Is GPU rendering on or off?

What GPU and what firmware version?

The OpenCL.dll module points to GPU.

Hah!! I googled your error and found your post on CreativeCow

(trying both places for help)
I have had over 80% failure ......... and some that failed on 3 or 4th attempt they did complete. Which confirms to me this is not a project file/media corruption issue.
GPU is ‘enabled’ under preferences, but no option to turn on (so presumed off) for MainConcept MPEG-2 template.
The graphics card was purchased specifically to provide CUDA support, it is a supported card and also there should be no OpenCL use as its CUDA.
The card works fine with other programs … and is identified and accepted by Movie Studio.
Have installed latest NVIDIA driver and video bios, and after seeing one post response uninstalled Quicktime. This did significantly reduced frequency of failures

The only 100% way to complete renders is by turning off GPU acceleration in Movie Studio preferences.
However I specifically purchased Movie Studio upgrade to get GPU support
Plus the card Geoforce NVIDIA 5600GTX is a supported card by Sony, and is recognised by Movie Studio.

You might want to know that due to the GPU issues with Vegas/Movie Studio SCS recently added the following to their KB troubleshooting advice.
"In current versions of Movie Studio and Vegas, go to Options -> Preferences -> Video (tab) and turn GPU acceleration of video processing OFF. Close and restart the application to apply the change."

That is good having bought the upgrade to MS to get GPU support

Having the latest video driver may not be best for MS, gaming maybe. Search the Pro forum, lots of good threads discussing video drivers. Posts by OldSmoke are particularly helpful.

Have you tried rendering with template default settings?
