Closed Captioning - Total n00b here

Cliff Etzel wrote on 11/10/2015, 1:19 PM
I'm being asked to produce a video for the local city government and the outline stipulates the use of closed captioning for the presentation. I've never done CC before and from the looks of it, PPro CS6 is a no go for that so was wondering what the process is for doing closed captioning within Vegas Pro.

Please be gentle....

Cliff,
CC is a piece of cake with Vegas. Especially if you use the VASST Caption Assistant plugin.

You need to ask some relevant questions, such as the broadcaster standards and in what format they will accept the captioned video.

By the sound of it, the video may not be intended for broadcast, in which case perhaps they meant subtitles.

In any event, once Vegas captioning is complete, built-in scripts (in Vegas) let you export the captions in a variety of formats, including subtitles.

Would be happy to take this offline with you if you wish. Send me a PM.

The HELP file spells out the procedure very clearly. Caption Assistant is good, but kind of expensive for small projects, and is missing a few features. Development seems to have stopped on it.

I think they incorreclty used the term Closed Captioning. I think you're right Tom regarding Subtitles. This isn't meant for broadcast, but for part of a presentation for for the general public at City Hall on a topic of interest to the community. I think I found what I was looking for after searching further on the SCS site -

http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/add_closed_captions_to_your_video_project

Of course they want this to happen, but I explained to them that given their short deadline, that transcribing the interviews to integrate subtitles is pushing it.

Will follow up via PM

Thanks

@DonaldT..

Respectfully disagree. I have captioned music videos and government PSA videos and as long as you have the script in plain text format, using CA is a no-brainer.

Not sure what you feel is missing, but on a first try of the plug-in, I captioned a 3 minute video in about 5 minutes. Fine tuning the markers was quick and painless.

@Cliff
I would highly recommend the investments if you think you will be getting more CC projects.

Tom, I like it. I have used it a lot, but I will make a list of things that is missing if you want. Of course, realize that I also use Caption Maker, which is a very expensive professional captioning software, so I am a bit jaded. I gave JR a few suggestions for improvements a few years ago, but he never followed up on them.
