Windows 10 Storage Spaces audio problems

I upgraded my 64-bit system to Windows 10 and began using Storage Spaces for my USB drives - both 2.0 and 3.0. I have two Storage Spaces, one made up of USB 3 drives and the other made up of USB 2 drives, both two-way mirrors, and I have the video files in the space made up of USB 3 drives and any separate audio files in the space made up of USB 2 drives.

I noticed a problem immediately in Vegas Pro 13. The _first_ audio file in the project will stutter, cutting in and out completely, and sometimes even mix up different sections of the wav file.

I deleted the SFK files so a rebuild would take place - no change.
I deleted the SFK files and rebuilt them with Sound Forge Pro 10 which, by the way, has no trouble playing the file correctly - still no change.
I copied the audio files to the USB 3 space - no change.
I copied the file to an internal disc - no problem, the file plays correctly.

Any ideas on how to fix this or is this simply a Vegas Pro 13 bug?

Does the problem occur if the files are on an internal drive?

No, read off the internal drive, Vegas has no problem.

I said the problem was "stuttering" which means that it plays audio for about a second and then plays nothing for second and continues to repeat this pattern. Sometimes, I have gotten screeching. The SFK file generated is corrupted and if Sound Forge uses it, it will play problematically in Sound Forge, too. If I delete the SFK file and let Sound Forge create its own, then no problem in Sound Forge.

I wouldn't regard this as a Vegas "bug". The so-called Storage Spaces feature is just software RAID and the priority of the design will be data integrity and not AV streaming, which is what you need for smooth audio and video.

I regard USB (all versions) as problematic for audio, let alone video. I don't use them for AV, and I don't have any problems.

In anticipation of the responses that will inevitably come along the lines of ".... but it doesn't happen with [insert-application-name]", fine, but I dont' use USB for AV and it doesn't happen for me in any application.

Offhand I would say your drives are competing for USB bandwidth.
Practical bidirectional throughput on usb2 is about 150 megabits.

Thanks for the advice.

I thought it was interesting that only Vegas seems to have the problem (Sound Forge is solid) and the problem is only with audio. On the other hand, Vegas has much more to do.

Again, I have no problem on internal drives and usually never have a problem on USB drives and the behavior is the same on Storage Spaces made up exclusively of USB 3 or Storage Spaces made up exclusively of USB 2 drives.

The worst trouble seems to be associated with 44,100/16-bit files.
