Subject:Insert Regions disabled when no loop region.

Forgive me I'm used to working with old SF 7 on PC.

I'm thinking of regions like I used to drop markers in and then convert markers to regions. I know I need to adjust my thinking.

What is with the 2 little yellow triangles? Why can't I drop a region mark in without selecting an area between the yellow triangles?

I cut up large .wav files into separate tracks and do not need to loop anything.

Thanks for any help, this is quite maddening.

Alex

A marker is a single point in time on the timeline. A region is the stretch of time between two points. You can't set a region until you have a stretch of time to set as the region.

The two yellow triangles are the beginning and ending points of a loop, but they aren't a selection. In that respect they are like two markers, but they are not a region. Double-clicking between them selects the stretch of time and then you have a selection that can become a region. So in answer to that part of the question, you can only set a region on a selection, not on a loop.

It's a little odd in that Sound Forge partially overlaps the functions of loops and selections, but it's not difficult once you get used to how it works.

OK, so if I have a continuous .wav file I want to cut up into two pieces how can I make sure that song 2 starts at the same spot that song 1 ends? Do I drag the start point of song 1 past the end point and call that my second region?

I'm sorry if I'm confusing the issue. I really only care about start points. I wonder why they got rid of convert markers to regions, sigh.

Thanks!

That's exactly what i do, if i have no need to retain the selections. A slightly more polished thing is to set three markers, one at the beginning, one the end, an a third at the cut point between the two sections. Then all it takes is a double-click between the markers of either section to select it. I usually prefer to retain markers between all sections for the life of working with the file in case i ever need to go back and redo something again.

You might even be able to do this with only one marker in the middle, skipping the beginning and end. I'm not running on a Mac so i can't test it that way, but it works under Windows.

@Chienworks: No Disrespect, but:

Windows = Sound Forge

Mac = a program with a similar name but no resemblance to Sound Forge in most major respects:

No JKL shuttle; No ^Y or F4 Repeat Last Command; No markers during recording; No input meters until a dummy file has been started, stopped and a new file armed; No playback of markers from the Regions List; No Spectral Display View; Almost all keyboard commands have been changed with only limited ability to modify them; etc, etc, etc.

If you're running on Windows, stay there. Do not under any circumstances change platforms if you want to actually get any work done!

I have no intention of ever getting a Mac, so no worries. ;)
