Subject:Newbee. Dumb question alert.

I got a copy of Sound Forge XP (4.0d) several years ago with a bundle from Macromedia. I've never had the occasion to use it until just the other day. I recorded an hour talk into a .wav file (85meg) and saved it into a lower quality .rm file (6.5 Kbps)which was about 3.5 meg in size. I uploaded it to the server, created the appropriate .ram file to point to it and voila', it came through perfectly. Here's the problem. I had an associate listen to it and he said it sounded like an old 45rpm record (anybody here remember those?) being played on a 33rpm. In other words the voice is actually being slowed down. My associate is on a slow connection, but that shouldn't slow the play speed, if I understand this stuff at all. Can anyone tell me what's happening and how I might correct it?

TIA

Bob

Do the .wav and .rm files play ok on your computer locally? Does the .rm file on the web server play ok for you? Can you post the URL to the .ram file so that we can see what it sounds like?

Select either of the files.

Tried to connect to the site you gave but it didn't work. My guess, however, is that your problem lies in the sample rate. Maybe the program that your associate is using to listen the file is not playing it at the correct sample rate. Try that.

He downloaded the latest Real Player, which is also what I have on mine. I haven't adjusted anything on mine, nor has he on his.

What would you recommend for a fail safe file? For just a simple talk, no music, what is the best bit rate to save to for moderate quality and small file size?

Bob, I've got the file 2/17 file playing on my computer right now and it seems to me to be running at the right speed. It is a little choppy which might make it seem slower though. 6.5Kbps may be just a bit too low. Between that and the loss of the high frequencies from the low encoding rate, it's probably just an illusion that it sounds slow. By the way, RealPlayer reports the file as 1:22:50.5 long, and that counter is usually pretty accurate. Is that how long the recording is supposed to be? If that's within a minute or so, then it's got to be playing at the right speed.

I've been using 8.5Kbps for voice and it's much clearer. Try these out and see if they sound ok to you:

I also had trouble getting to the page you listed. I got a 404 not found error. So i browsed to churcht.org and then clicked on the Sermons link, which looks like exactly the same URL, but it loaded fine. Go figure.

ps ... at about 4 minutes into the recording Pastor Van Buskirk says "Turn in your Bibles to Mark, chapter 2" and then there's a 25 second blank spot. Feel free to edit those gaps out before you encode the file. Then your listeners won't wonder why the sound stopped. ;)

This has been really strange. I called up the server and told them about the problems, and the tech logged in and I heard him listening to the file which was definately slowed down, and he thought it sounded okay because he had never heard my Pastor before. I checked the time you listed and it matches. I went to your church site. How has this been beneficial to your congregation? How have they used it? Just curious. You can feel free to email me privately at bobgreen@bobgreen.com.

I'd check sample rates too.

Satan has possessed the website, try to have your pastor come and do an exorcist.
