First, note that there are dozens of variations of MOV and thousands of variations of AVI, so it's not as simple as just converting one to the other. So are you talking about DV-MOVs and converting them to DV-AVIs or converting AVCHD-MOVs to editable M2Ts?

That said, I'd recommend biting the bullet and spending $20 for Quicktime Pro. It's an excellent program and a great value that converts MOVs to a number of formats and even does some basic editing.

But before you start converting files, make sure you know what you're doing. The wrong settings could create a file that's even less compatible with your editor than your original file.

What is the source and resolution of the MOV you're trying to convert and what is the reason you want to convert it?

I think Steve's last question is the most important one, and i'll add one more: why aren't you using the MOV files as-is in your Vegas Movie Studio project?
