Subject:Connecting 2 CPU's

I have been using Acid 3.0, Vegas 2.0, & SoundForge 5.0 for various projects. The problem that I have ran into is trying to use VST plug-ins/Wrapper Lyte (Halion or SampleTankXL) as SoundSource. --Sonic Foundry is non supportive as my research has uncovered.

Now what I am attempting is to connect 2 CPU's. One that will run either Acid or Vegas as a recorder, and one that will house my Halion or SampleTankXL as a sound source.

CPU as recorder= 1.2Ghz Athlon processor, 384megs RAM, Echo MIA soundcard(2 Ins-2 Outs-SPDIF), Windows ME

CPU as sound source= PIII 800Mhz processor, 256megs RAM, DAL The CardD Plus soundcard(2 Ins-2 Outs), Windows SE

I use an 8track mixer/pre amp to input into my MIA. (Need a card w/breakout box)
If I route Audio Out from CPU w/Halion-- Mixer-- Audio In on CPU w/Acid or Vegas. Should/Would this be the correct hookup or would you guys recommend a different hookup?

Also, if I wanted to record this as a MIDI signal...what would I need to do? I am thinking of getting a USB/MIDI box-- or would I need to get a sound card w/MIDI for one of my CPU's?

--Lot's of money spent trying to set up a home studio where I can record others--Need to make this work!--

Thank You guys very much (in advance) for your help!!!

the big problem i see with this set up is if you connect each computer with analog lines, thus making it go throught the A/D D/A converters twice. if you could hookup them up the SPDIF you'd be stylin.
USB MIDI would work fine, it's just drivers and your computer won't know anything except there's MIDI channels to route data over.

Good luck!

Thank you for your response! I will look into SPDIF. I'm not very familiar with it. I definately feel that I need to stay digital not messing with analog, but you do feel that I am at least on the right track, right? THANK YOU for your advice!!!

well... if your using your second computer as an instrument that has to play in realtime with live instruments and then record on the the other computer... your setup sounds great. but if your just going to use Halion/etc for making tracks to add to your mix, the second computer seems redundant as you could just mix down your software created tracks and add them to your recorded live sounds later.

but if you go with the dual computer setup, going all digital would be the way to go for sure for computer to computer recording.

Good luck

Yeah Yeah Yeah, I see what you're saying.... Just do it on the same CPU. Thank You Very Much!

Now what about this... What if I have 2 soundcards connected inside my CPU,I could run say... Fruity Loops - Halion - Or any other Soft Synth out of one soundcard going into the other with either ACID 3.0 or Vegas 2.0 as a RECORDER? (right?)

Do you think it would be faster or even be possible to run 1 CPU with dual processors?

(1) 1.2Ghz AMD Athlon & (1) 800Mhz PIII

I ask this because I have tried like hell to get my programs optimized in settings but I still get the awful "clicks" & "pops" sometimes and people tell me that the CPU is running out of resources. (although the RAM meter that runs in the bottom right corner usually reads less than 50megs of RAM out of 384megs being used. 50/384
I am really trying to build the best with what I have. I want this to be able to do professional editing work so I really want it to be non-conflicting, anywhere!

All thoughts & ideas always welcomed!
Thank You in advance!
