Want to replace source file yet maintain edits

I searched for this topic but couldn't find it. Real basic. I ripped a DVD (w/ a trial version of Slysoft) to mp4 (for the purposes of editing it from an R to a PG rating). Upon completing edits, I attempted to render but VMS 10 continued to render infinitely and wouldn't stop at the loop marker end. So I was advised that the rip must've been corrupted and that I should re-rip. I Re-ripped DVD with (presumably/hopefully) more reliable, purchased software (Aimersoft) and now want to replace the source file in the project I originally edited with the newly ripped source file (ripped to AVI). However, when I specify replacement file, it imports but all the media in the timeline displays as "media offline". I've done this years ago where all the edits adopt the new source file but I seem to be missing something this time. Am I remembering correctly that this can be done?

Many of our pro forum members, including me, make a portion of our incomes from producing and selling commercial content and movies on DVD, so your descriptions pose a conflict of interest, and are generally not appropriate.

Specifically, altering or editing copyrighted content for any purpose is not a topic for discussion. See the forum service rules 8, 9, and 10 if you have questions, and thanks for understanding.

It should work using your method. You said it imports the media, but displays as "media offline". Is the "media offline" on the timeline or in your project media bin?

Can you describe your steps in detail and order?

re: musicvids response, I would assume you are doing this for personal use.

I've tried it 2 ways. First I just right clicked on the source file in the media bin and replaced it with the new rip. After that failed I tried it proxy swap style closing the program, changing source file location, reopening program and specifying new file. Both times everything on the timeline displayed as "media offline" even if I change the name of the replacement file to match the orig. The stuff in the media bin does not display as "media offline" it just stays as is.

Just taking out the inappropriate bits for my fam. No re-distribution :)

It's better to share only what is necessary, your intended use notwithstanding.

Do you have any insights into the issue?

Is your new ripped file usable in a new, empty project? Maybe it's not the substitution methods that are at fault, but the file itself.

You are correct! it was ripped to AVI which plays back fine with a media player but when brought into an empty project only appears on the timeline as a couple second scrap of audio with no video component. Why in the world would that be?

It's quite possible that the "more reliable" Aimersoft is making noncompliant files. Having never heard of it nor researched it, that's about all i can tell you.

Hmm, okay. Thanks for your time and help!
