Nice transitions for wedding

relaxvideo wrote on 7/9/2015, 2:09 PM
I know, i know, i shouldn't use many transitions or between each clip in a short music clip. So i use cut or short dissolve. But what transition can i use when i want to visually separate different places for example? I ask because Vegas built in transitions doesn't look good at all for professional work. (i still don't know how to set starting/end to smooth by default..)
I tried some newbluefx transitions, but again, 95% of them is useless for me, only space on my hard drive. Seriously: who like to see bouncing cubes, liquify or shredder? Very weird.

I only look for a nice, soft transition package which is cool in 2015 and not like 80-90's style :)

Anybody can recommend some?

That's just it, though. Professionals don't USE excessive transitions if they don't have to. The more transitions beyond cut or dissolve a person uses, the more amateur it looks.

I don't use them as a "transition." I use them as part of an effect.

If I need something that just lightly separates a section of video, I just do a really fast fade out fade in. Usually about 5-6 frames out and in at 24p, or .25 seconds each way. Very fast, very subtle, and it does it's job.

Lens flares or rays can make a nice transition.

Oh god no, enough of the lens flares.

C'mon dude. Most weddings that hire a videographer are illusory from the get-go. Get off your frick'in high horse.

bit of a problem here:

a. most wedding clients want their videos to look outstanding / expensive and full of the 'wow' factor

b. when a. is fulfilled they all end up looking pretty much the same

c. since few people watch other peoples wedding videos b. is unimportant

d. very few wedding clients have any aesthetic sensibilities regarding tackiness.

e. refer to a.

To some people (fewer every day, it seems) video is still magic. Effx add to the magic. We call it cheesy, they may call it cool. The thing here is to know your audience. I think lens flares, vignetting, etc are all tools that can be used to enhance someone else's viewing experience. We get jaded cause we see it a lot and see it overused a lot.
Back in the 70's, camera operators discovered the zoom lens. It was used a lot to emphasize reactions, reveal a wider picture or just to keep from moving the camera. It seemed pretty cool back then, now it seems cheesy. Was it wrong to use it? I don't think so.

Thanks, as i said i don't want to use it too often, just sometimes.
Anybody remember Scala multimedia mm200? It had beautiful transitions which was very smooth. I search similar ones.
Or gradient maps for the default dissolve transition?

Bingo.

I've done weddings here and there as a photographer and/or videographer for over forty years. When the brides start performing for the camera you know anything goes. Frankly, I hope I never do another one. I'd only consider if it was a lifelong friend to whom I couldn't say "no" and then I 'd try to think of a physical impairment as an excuse.

I rarely use anything but cuts and cross-fades. To represent a change of location/topic, I fade to black and then fade from black to the new scene. That's one second fade out, one second fade in. This works for me but "your mileage may vary".

DGates said, "The more transitions beyond cut or dissolve a person uses, the more amateur it looks."

I think that is generalizing it way too much!

There are videos/projects that truly benefit from transitions as long as they are used appropriately. Too many or too few is when the video/project becomes amateurish.

A true professional knows what the balance is for transitions vs. cuts and dissolves.

Balance, not generalizations is the key to a professional video/project.

Relax, watch TV for a day, take notes, and copy styles that other editors have created. Most professionals will create their own transition if anything beyond a cut or a dissolve.

I think what you're looking for is a nice light leak, and Gorilla Grain has my absolute favourites.

They have a 3 pack for free, but for $99 with the promo code on their site, it's a must-have.

To separate major sections, I like to dissolve to BLACK for 1-2 seconds and change music. I like the KISS approach.

I came across this on the Sony A7S facebook group:

Looks great, even considering the usual kitsch factor , and uses simple crossfades throughout.

Cut, fade, and dissolve is all anyone needs.
It's all the rest that look cheesy.
