Subject:Punch in and out recording

whats the best way to punch in the middle of of a song then punch out with out erasing what is already recorded in the same track? ..is there any way to select the area where it needs to be record and then out, since I have to play the instrument I need both hands on the instrument.

I typically record your scenario using another audio track then move the clip to where it's needed on the track of interest.

Recording into another track, then grafting back is one way.

But the main method is :
1 - Split the section you want to punch into.
2 - Click to put the cursor to where you want to start playback (maybe with some pre-roll)
3 - CTRL-Click to select the region to be recorded into (doesn't move playback cursor)
4 - Arm and hit Record.

The unselected parts play back, and the new program is recorded into the selected area.

These 4 steps tale only a few seconds !
