Subject:SF 10 - Windows 8.1 - not starting
Posted by: cmalone78

Hi All

Just upgraded to Windows 8.1 on a MacBook Pro running Bootcamp.

Sound Forge 10 no longer starts. No splash screen, nothing, just a generic compatibility error message.

Tried compatibility settings with Windows 8, 7, XP SP3, etc with no change.

Some Googling led me down the path of Nvidia display drivers. Was running 327.02. Updated to 327.23 and then the 331.40 beta with no change.

Any ideas? Thanks!

Cheers
Chris

Should have mentioned that this is SF 10 build 507.

Cheers

My 8 and 8.1 both told me I had to do a reinstall. Did and it is working okay.

Thanks, Colinu, will give that a try and report back. Did you lose all your presets after uninstalling and reinstalling? Just thinking I might back it all up just in case!

So a reinstall seems to have allowed me to re-register (license authorization) the application and run it. However, I must now run it with elevated privileges (as Administrator) rather than my normal user. It will otherwise keep prompting to register (authorize) but when clicking "Next" nothing happens.

This is strange as it was previously running as my normal user OK on Windows 8.

The problem, so far, is that drag and drop doesn't work. Searching the forum, others seem to have reported this with Windows 8.

Have examined what registry keys it's querying as elevated vs normal user but can't see what's causing the trouble.

You are not alone. I experienced the same problem about two weeks ago - not sure if Microsoft or Sony Creative Software or a third party is at fault. Somewhere in your user settings or registry something is now messed up. Try creating a new Admin account and then install using that account.

Sound Forge will work fine on that account, but will you will still experience same problem on your existing account.

You will probably end up deleting your current user account, and losing its settings. Of course back up any documents, bookmarks etc, contained within your your account before deleting the account.

I initially thought rather than upgrading from Windows 8 to 8.1, I would do a clean install. Microsoft won't let you do a clean install of 8.1 with your 8 Product key.

I am not advocating this, just providing info - here is one user's page about the issue.

I am having the exact same problem with SF Pro 11. I click the icon on my desktop and am prompted to register it then I click "next" and nothing happens.

It was working fine the other day so I don't know if it has anything to do with the Windows 8 update or what. Doesn't make sense.

I am also getting this on win 8.1, basically I go to run the icon - which worked fine and this suddenly asks for admin rights. Once I shift right click to 'run as administrator' it runs, but I can't drag and drop to it? Completely breaks my workflow - any ideas - I am a beta tester so will post this on there too!.

Soundforge 10 has only ever worked for me on Windows 8 with 'run as administrator', and as you say, drag and drop does not work - which kills workflow and makes me feel like a chump for how much money I spent on what I thought was supposedly a 'pro level' bit of software.

I spent over 3 weeks with Sony technical support trying to fix this, must have re-installed it over 15 times based on their instructions - getting nowhere every time.

In the end they gave up and offered me a 25% discount on the next Sony application I buy - must have known I'd never buy anything of theirs again.

It's pathetic that Windows 8.1 is now out and everyone's got the same old issues that Sony never fixed on Windows 8, and I know I'm not alone with this problem.

As one software developer to another : Sony, your over-zealous 'authorization' system is turning away legitimate customers and I'm sure it gets cracked anyway - so why not relax it a bit to stop alienating those of us who did pay for it?

Thanks for this link, Sony technical support didn't try half of this:

http://music.cornwarning.com/2013/03/31/sound-forge-pro-windows-8-frustrating-frustration/

... I'll try out those instructions at some point but I've kind of lost the will after having wasted so much time on it already.

GoatBoy if you are telling the truth I will tell Sony software good by I've use them for over 10 years. My Vegas and Sound forge Pro has run seamlessly for over a year with 8 and now SF 10 is not compatible and that means to me when I use Vegas and need to make a timeline adjustment with SF10 I can't do it. This is a major setback for me right in the middle of a major project. I hate to go back to Pro Tools and Avid because I like the simplicity of Sony stuff. SONY should fix this problem with 10 and 11 Now and stop making excuses blaming Microsoft.

This is an old thread but I thought I'd be more useful than Sony and post a fix which actually worked for me. At one point I was desperate enough to consider trying a cracked copy of SF11 (I'm a legit SF 10 customer) but some web searches revealed than many poor paid-up users of SF11 are STILL suffering from this 'requires elevated privileges' nonsense. Unbelievable.

To recap on the symptoms:

- You're running Windows 8.x
- You install Soundforge using Sony's convoluted method which no other software needs (enabling 'secret' admin accounts, installing under an admin account, praying to the Rain God, whatever)
- If you're lucky it works for a while but inevitably the Rain God becomes unhappy again and next time you open it you get '... requires elevated privileges'
- After this, you can 'run as admin' but drag and drop no longer works
- Possibly you can fix it by uninstalling and reinstalling again, but not always

The fix:

- Open regedit
- Find the key named ''HKEY_USERS\XXXXXX-XXXX_Classes\VirtualStore\MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Sony Creative Software"
- Delete the key
- Close regedit
- Soundforge now works again

Note : in the key name above, 'XXXXX-XXXX' is a number which may be unique to your machine.

Apologies for any sarcasm - it's the most positive spin I can put on this fiasco.

I just right-clicked the "Forge110.exe" in C: > Program Files (x86) > Sony > Sound Forge 11.0.

Clicked "Properties" > Compatibility > "Run this program as an administrator" and clicked OK. Works from there.

But then drag and drop won't work because it's running with elevated privileges - lower privilege processes (such as Windows Explorer) can't interfere with higher ones.

Not only drag and drop - any such operation from Explorer which should invoke Soundforge via a file association (double clicking, 'Open As...') just get ignored.

Depends on your workflow, but for me this functionality is essential.

Regardless, why should Soundforge even require this messing around over 2 years after it was reported? Very naughty Sony.

Hmm...drag and drop doesn't work for me either, but "open with" and double-clicking to open in Sound Forge does as long as I tell Windows that I wanted to use Sound Forge to open it.

It sticks too afterward.

The Rain God must like you a bit more than me.

Did you try deleting the registry key I mentioned? If you're unsure, regedit allows you to export the registry key to a file first. If it all goes wrong you can re-import the key again.

Sony : There's no excuse for not releasing an update to SF10 and SF11 to fix this, Windows 8 has been around for 2 years now. Your technical support gave up on me and whilst hunting for solutions I found that it also frustrates Vegas users too. I can't speak for others but I've personally decided to go to one of your competitors when its time to update.

Thank you GoatBoy for your suggestion re RegEdit to sole the SF11 elevated privileges problem.

I had SF11 working successfully on my W8.1 desktop after creating an Admin user account, but the SSD C drive failed and was replaced under warranty about 4 weeks ago. Supposedly, VP11 299 had solved the privileges problem so I only created my own user account though with admin status as I guess most people do. But, after about 28 days - and that's today - VP11 failed to load. I followed your RegEdit recommendation and, voila, VP11 sprang to life even via 'audio editor' in VP13.

I did note that before deleting the Sound Forge entry in RegEdit, that there was no entry other than a blank default line. After restarting the computer and starting VP11, RegEdit had rebuilt a Sound Forge entry to replace what had been deleted, but this time the SF RegEdit entry included the path to SF11"s exe file.

I hope that this approach works permanently for me, but at least there's now a fairly simple workaround even if it has to be used every 4 weeks. I could use SF10 via VP, but I want to access SF11 from VP so that I can, as if often necessary, to link on to SpectraLayers 3 from SF11, particularly since SL3 handles 5.1 soundtracks (yay!).

I recently began using the Windows 10 Preview on my machine. Previously I was running Windows 8.1 and had to run Sound Forge 10 with Elevated Privileges. This problem has gone away. Not sure why, but some additional info that may or may not be relevant.

Installed the SF 11 trial, then uninstalled it.

Someone mentioned something about Nvidia drivers. Had some problems unrelated to Sound Forge (couldn't update to the latest Windows 10 build) so I thoroughly uninstalled Nvidia drivers (removed folders from Program Files, AppData and some Registry entries).

Update to my last post: the problem eventually came back.

Further update: updated to build 10159, and the problem is gone - for now. I suspect it will return.

Every three weeks, SF11 reverts to the "admin" rubbish. Deleting from Regedit works - but why is this not already solved by SCS?

Windows 10 Pro 64bit upgraded from 7Pro. Administrator.
Sound forge 10 Pro ran fine for months. Today - asking for permission.
Set to run as admin - didn't work.
Did the suggested regedit. Didn't work.
Now when clicked on to run I get a warning and a yes/no to run the thing. It runs but this is annoying.
Any fix yet? Thanks.

Since nobody's answering I just turned off UAC. Works fine now.
