SoundForge is having trouble recognising my YAMAHA PSR-280 Keyboard!
I checked the help menu and followed the instructions until i was told to select an "input" in my midi/sync tab of the preference menu. The "input" only gives me the option of selecting "none"
I have also checked that all the cables are plugged in. What must i do? please help me.

Grimnir,

If Sound Forge only gives you the "none" option when selecting a MIDI device, it's not because it can't see that particular keyboard. It's because you have no MIDI devices set up on your computer. Otherwise, a choice would be present. What kind of sound card are you using in your computer? With what kind of cables are you connecting your keyboard with? Get this information, and we'll continue discussion.

Oh, and do a quick check for me:

1. Click "Start" on the taskbar.
2. Goto "Settings", and then "Control Panel".
3. Double-click on "Multimedia".
4. Click the "MIDI" tab.
5. Is the option button "Single Instrument" clicked? If so, are there instruments present in the listbox? If so, what are they named?

Nick LaMartina

alright,

the device listed in my the "midi" tab of the multimedia menu is:
"VIA FM Synthesis"

This device was also listed when i disconnected my keyboard and rebooted my pc.

I am using an on board "via" Sound card. I dont know the model and details but will find them if required.

Cables: (this is what it says on the package)
"computer accesories"
"high quality interface cable"
100% shielded
gold plated contacts
pvc molded
high quality cables
and networking parts

On the cable is written UNIVERSAL MIDI CABLE

Grimnir,

Can you describe the MIDI cable? What shape are the connectors on the ends? How many pins are in each? Is there just one connector on each end, or two? Also, how old is this motherboard? What is the model number? Who makes it? Get this information, and we'll continue this dialogue.

Regards,
Nick LaMartina

Great,

The midi cable has 2 connectors on each end. One in and out for the keyboard,
the other 2 are one female and one male. Both are 15 pins/holes. The male pin fits into my sound card.
Motherboard: I dont know how i can find out which model i have, I checked my device manager, which was fruitless. Yet the motherboard supports my AMD duron 600 MHz CPU.
Is that enough? I lost my manual.. I baught the motherboard over 2 years ago.

I still have a sound blaster live in my other computer. perhaps i should give that card a go?

THX!

Grim,

Okay, I'll take that information and try to do a bit of research for you so we can get this problem nailed down. I'll get back to you as soon as I can.

Grim,

I've search all through the internet, and I cannot find a word on your board. Did it include a driver disc? Perhaps are there drivers that aren't installed?

What do you want Forge and this keyboard to do? Forge is NOT a MIDI sequencer. You can trigger files in Forge with keys on an external keyboad, but you can't sequence with it.

How do you have the PSR-280 keyboard connected to your Computure?

In order for the PC to recieve data from an external MIDI device, you need to have a MIDI input port on your PC.

In order for the PC to send MIDI data to and external MIDI device, you need to have an external MIDI output port on your PC.

Most mother boards do not have MIDI ports. They may have a joystick port, in which case you will need to get a cable to adapt the joystick port to a MIDI cable. Even then, this will only work if the hardware has MIDI i/o support. If it does, then you may have to install a driver for your mother board in order for the PC to see the MIDI ports.
