So, a few times now, I've done a good amount of work on a file, and then went to save it. Then it would go to the "Save As..." dialog box and I would instinctively hit "Save" before realizing that the previous file I saved was in mono, so the template was still the same for the mono file. The it rebuilds the waveform and I see my work ruined by being mashed into a mono file. Argh. Is there any way to get the stereo file back?

I seem to recall that there's an option buried somewhere to 'undo past save'. This might be very helpful for you in the future, but if it's not enabled already it certainly won't help you with past saves.

I suppose if you haven't done anything, and i mean anything else at all, since the save then some sort of undelete utility might recover the previous version of the file.

Seems strange though. For me the save template defaults to whatever the current session's parameters are.

So I just tested out the "Undo Past Save". I normally have it unchecked. I checked it. Copied a section of a stereo file and pasted to new. Saved it as a mono. I have the "Automatically Reopen" option on, so the mono file opened up, and there's nothing available to Undo. It just says "Can't Undo".

I just went through all the options. I couldn't find anything that mentions "Base template on current file settings" or anything to that effect. It loads up the template of whatever my last save was.

That's another difference maybe. I never have the 'automatically reopen' checked. I turned it off in Sound Forge 4.5 about an hour after installing it, and with each new version that's one of the first things i turn off. That never seemed like a good idea to me. Also, now that i think of it, when that option enabled of course there wouldn't be anything to undo. Once the new version is opened the previous file is closed, so there's nothing to undo.

I see what you mean. Leaving the "Automatically Reopen" unchecked still leaves the old file present. I think I checked it originally because I was sick of being asked if I wanted to save the "starred" file.

The problem i had with it was that after i finished all my edits i was saving the file to a variety of compressed formats for web distribution. With that checked i'd save to MP3, then the original would close and the MP3 open, and build the waveform display, then i'd have to close it and reopen the original, then save to WMA, which would close the original, open the WMA file, and build the waveform display, then i'd have to close it and reopen the original ... etc. This just seemed completely pointless as well as being a huge waste of time.

For the very rare case in which i do want to open the new file, i can do it myself.
