Yes, they make external sound cards for laptops. Creative Labs recently released one called the "Extigy". It connects through the USB port, and it has some amazing specs (24-bit, Dolby 5.1 decoding, MIDI, S-PDIF, etc). It even works as a standalone unit. The address for it is here:

Echo makes a professional-grade soundcard for the laptop but it isn't cheap.
