What's it doing to "not work". I'm also running XP and it works OK for me as well. Do you have something specific I could try to see if I could break it as well? Tom |

Ok , So I've tryed installing the 5.0f desinstalling the 5.0e version on WIN XP there everything was fine... so I decided to format my C: and run a Clean install of XP , install SF 5.0f and boom shows the splash screen and close straight...(I had to run it with compatibily mode for win 2k). I know im not the only one with this Issue so thats why I'm here... N.B. SF 5.0e was working fine... TX |

OK, I don't want to stay on this topic for days but for those who can't pass the splash U have to set your SF.EXE in compatibility mode for win 2000 to make it work... still its not really good for stability but we still waiting for someone comin up with a solution... Regards. |

Could everyone here who's having problems getting 5.0f to work with XP post their system specs? Maybe there's a connection, like a soundcard or something. Be sure to also contact SF tech support if anyone hasn't done so. At the very least, they'll be aware of the problem if a solution hasn't been found yet. Iacobus |

Wow, the same thing just started happening to me too. I installed the 5.0f update to my existing 5.0e version in XP Pro several weeks ago and everything was working fine. Today, I try to open SF5.0f and as soon as the splash screen appears the program closes. Billy Buck |

I just tried the Win2000 compatibility mode trick and now it works! I guess SF5.0f is not XP compatible after all. Funny that 5.0e worked fine in XP though. Billy Buck |

I am also now getting an error message each time I start ACID 3.0f and Vegas Video 3.0 "An error occured starting ACID/Vegas Video. The reason for the error could not be determined" I wonder if this has something to do with SF5.0f, since it is my default audio editor for each program. It is really weird. Billy Buck |

Do any of you having this problem happen to be running Antares or Waves products that use the Pace Interlock copy protection? There seems to be some connection on my system with above 5.0b Forge and Antares (possibly Waves) together. If I run 5.0f in Win 2000 compatiability mode, it loads ok.... Might be a "Pace interlock copy protection" problem, though..... comments???? |

I do not have PACE on my system and I refuse to buy or support any products that use PACE. I do not own WAVES or Antares programs. But I am still having the same problem of SF 5.0f immediately closing at the splash screen. You can only open the program in XP's W2K compatibilty mode. Strange thing is SF 5.0 worked perfectly in XP with the previous "e" version. Billy Buck |

For those of you who are continuing to have problems- I have a few question to see if we can get to the bottom of this one. Of course, I do recommend talking to customer support as well. There seems to be a bit of a variant of problems here so is many stem from a few different things. First of all, is there anyone having problems w/ a fresh install of 5.0f? For those of you who are having problems after an upgrade- 1. Which version of Forge are you upgrading from? 2. Did you uninstall the previous version or install the upgrade on top of the other version? 3. Did 5.0f ever run? If not, does it always stall on the splash screen or somewhere else? If so, can you think of anything that might have changed on your system? Where is 5.0f running into a problem. Something to try: Completely uninstall Sound Forge 5. Install fresh 5.0f. Thanks. -Jenn |

Jenn, Thank you for your concern. I did contact support, on my dime and they acted like free Microsoft support...useless,arogant and "it is all my problem" (maybe an isolated case...but never been treated that way from Sonic Foundry before...I am a 3.0a user from wayyyy back) answer for question 1 from 5.0E answer for question 2 not the first time but did start with a clean drive the 2nd time answer for question 3. Yes... It did run 5.0f for a week or so in XP mode (referring to compatibility modes within Microsoft XP) answer for question 4 As I said in my last post, I have to believe it has to do with HASP or Pace Interlock security. That is what I have been battling the last week as well. It worked and then it didn't. Forge went down at the same time. The only other thing I can think of is updates to Symantec products with live update or Microsoft XP updates that were downloaded. For those reading, any of you run Norton Firewall 2002, Systemworks 2002 or Roxio 5.0D CD Creator? Those all have been updated on my system besides what was mentioned above. Jenn, there is an issue here. It may not be a Sonic Foundry problem, but you help is greatly needed. This all started with you and Antares going down at the same approx time. I hope this helps. Winxp Pro Abit KR7A-Raid 384 Meg PC2100 Crucial SoundBlaster Live X-Gamer Acer 8x4x32 Cambridge Soundworks FPS2000 digital I didnt do a upgrade. I just intalled 5.0f from scratch and it works fine. But all I do is use it to normalize my mp3s for IRC Streaming into a channel i have setup as a radio station. Maybe a fresh install of 5.0f will fix it. Instead of upgrading. Good Luck, William |

Hi PB, Did you turn of 8.3 file name creation under XP? It's a registry hack that is supposed to increase NTFS performance by not writing an 8.3 file name entry in a secondary file table. Turning this feature off has not increased any performance visibly and it's caused nothing but problems for me in installing and running certain 32bit applications. Try uninstalling SF, and then install in a folder with less than 8 characters. (eg c:\sound\sforge). Do the same with the shared plugin folder when asked in the install. Now try running SF again. Does it work? If it does then it highlights that you may have 8.3 file name creation turned off for your partition. It's no use turning it back on, I've tried that. Only a fresh install of XP, and then your affected applications will fix this issue. Regards, xstatik |

Problem: Run SF5.0f latest build, I get the very quick splash screen and then SF exits. System config: Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition (5.1, Build 2600) MBoard/BIOS: SOYO Dragon Plus / 42302e31 Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2000+, MMX, 3DNow, ~1666MHz Memory: 1536MB RAM DirectX Version: DirectX 8.1 (4.08.01.0810) Video: NVIDIA GeForce3 Ti 200 Driver Version: 6.13.10.2312 (English) Sound: SB Live! Wave Device Driver Version: 5.12.01.3300 (English) o Problems exist with fresh install AND upgrade install of 5.0f (from 5.0e which works fine) o 5.0f never runs o Doesn't "stall on splash screen". What happens is the splash flashes very quickly and SF never runs. Exits immidiately. Splash flashes so fast that I can't even see it... just a screen flash. o Complete uninstall and fresh install of 5.0f did not work. o Compatability mode set to Win2000 and SF 5.0f works. Conclusion, IMHO: SF 5.0f latest build is NOT compatable with XP. If it "works fine for you", you are lucky. It will probably stop working at some point. Sonic Foundry support: Time to address this problem. Please post here to show you are aware of it and working towards a solution. Thank you. guitrldy |

I am seeing the very same problem... I was running SoundForge 5.0d just fine on my WinXP Pro box, downloaded SF 5.0f, uninstalled the SF 5.0d instance, rebooted, and installed SF 5.0f. I entered my serial number, did the online registration, saw the splash screen briefly, and then nothing...no trace of SoundForge running. Next I uninstalled SF 5.0f, reinstalled SF 5.0d, then installed SF 5.0f over 5.0d - this exhibited the exact same behavior. I went back SF 5.0d and it works fine...apparently something is broken in this 5.0f build! I installed the latest Echo drivers (6.01), uninstalled SF 5.0d, installed SF 5.0f and basically get the same behavior...I enter my serial number, choose online registration, which goes through ok, and then I see the SF splash screen, and a second later I see the 'scanning for plugins' dialog, but just for a second or two, and then the splash screen vanishes along with the 'scanning for plugins' dialog. So I uninstalled 5.0f and reinstalled 5.0d, submited the registration, and received a message that I had exceeded the registration limit, please try later, or something like that. Hey, I don't mind spending my time trying to characterize a problem that should have been caught by the Sonic Foundry QA group, but don't penalize me for that by disabling my serial number...THAT IS BOGUS!!!!!!!!! |

Well, it definitely appears to have a tie in to the change that was made to my system (day one OK running on MOTU 2408 MKII...day two switch to Echo Layla...SF5 craps out)...if you check some of the other responses it appears that those who are having issues are those with Echo cards as well, not necessarily Midiman users (as yourself)...just a thought. Yeah, go ahead and install SF5.0e, it runs fine in XP. I could never get SF5.0f to work in XP without having to invoke the W2K compatibility mode. I unistalled SF5.0f and re-installed the previous "e" update and now everything is back to normal. It always pays to keep a copy of the preceeding update, in case the new one does not take. The "e" update works fine in XP, while the "f" update closes down SF5.0 as soon as the splash screen appears. Hopefully, a "g" update will address this issue. Billy Buck |

For those having this problem... Please go into your Services app. This can be accessed from Start--->Control Panel, then Administrative Tools--->Services. Scroll down until you see Terminal Services. Is this set to disabled? If so, double click on it to bring up the Properties window. Halfway down you would see Startup type. Change that to Manual and click OK. Now right-click on the Terminal Services and click on Start. If it is set to Manual already, go ahead and start it if it is not running already. Once started try to run Sound Forge. This is by no means a sure thing... just something that I stumbled upon with a single user. Thought it was worth checking with everyone. Thanks, Brian |

Thanks Brian(SF) that did the trick! I had my Terminal Services disabled, which I had done previously, when I was "optimizing" my XP OS for digital audio. I did not realize that Terminal Services was needed for digital audio. It would be great if SF could post in the FAQ area what Services are required for using SF apps while using a W2K/XP OS. Many DAW freaks like to fine tune their systems for optimal performance while using the least amount of system resources :) Billy Buck |

Here's my problem: I was running SF5 (build 117) with no problems on Win XP Home. I then upgraded to Win XP Pro and everything went wrong. SF5 would launch, but quickly vanished. I uninstalled it and reloaded it again. Same problem. I tried the compatibility tricks but that didn't work, either. I then uninstalled it again, reloaded and launched it in DEMO mode. No problem at all. But as soon as I activate it as a full program it shuts down again. I even updated SF5 to version 5f and it still does the same thing. It's been over a month with no help or hint of a solution from support. I'm beginning to get a little pissed off. |
