Hourglass delay when accessing video files VP9

I have a new installation of Vegas Pro 9.

Running XP Pro Sp3. Core 2 Quad, 4 gigs ram.

When I access an avi file from the explorer in Vegas as soon as I touch the file with the pointer there's a hesitation before I can move the file to the timeline - I get an hourglass and see the computer activity light churning. The length of the delay seems related to how large the file is. I've seen this consistently with files on different drives.

Once VP9 lets me move it to the timeline everything is good - behaves normally otherwise, this delay is just annoying.

Also, saved projects are slow in loading - it takes several minutes.

In my previous experience with Vegas Pro 8 I didn't experience either of these symptoms.

What model of camcorder is this video coming from and what format and resolution is it?

What are your Vegas Video Project Settings?

Have you considered upgrading to more current versions of Windows and Vegas? Particularly if you're editing more current video formats (AVCHD, for instance), newer versions of Vegas and 64-bit versions of Windows handle these formats sooooooo much more efficiently! If you're working with a video format like AVCHD, DSLR or a professional video format, Vegas 9 is really a very primitive system.

The video is from various sources. I get the same delay whatever the video is. DV avi or HuffYuv avi.

As I say I didn't encounter these symptoms with Vegas Pro 8 with the exact same machine. Grabbed file, put onto timeline. Building peaks took a minute if it was a file I hadn't accessed before but I didn't get this delay just to put the file onto the timeline. When loading a project it took a few seconds for the files to load, the timeline thumbnails to fill in, nothing like the time it takes to load a project with VP9.

I would have thought going to a newer version than VP8 would yield an improvement.
