Vegas 8 and AVI, MOV, MP4, WMV -- black screen

I searched quite a bit for solutions to the black screen and have converted my to-be-imported MOV files to MP4, WMV, and AVI--all to no avail. The screen stays black (although I can hear audio).

My Quicktime version is 7.69 apparently.

Downloading codecs can be dangerous, I understand, so...is there a solution?

Thanks in advance.

Well, usually when only audio plays in Vegas it's a sign that you have the correct audio codec but not the correct video codec.

Both MOV and AVI are containers so you could have an incompatible video encoding in either of them. MP4... I don't remember how well Vegas 8 supports that codec. WMV? I'd think an old version of Vegas would play it but maybe there's a gotcha in there too. You don't say *how* you're doing these conversions.

So, assuming your .mov file plays in quicktime, maybe I'd export a new quicktime movie from it but chose a photojpeg codec. I'm pretty sure Vegas will play that. The files won't be small but it should work.
